Title Lab Assistant- Sheboygan Medical Office Building Description This position will work 36 hrs per week Job Description and Essential Functions Job Title/Position: Lab Assistant/Phlebotomist Job Classification: Direct Patient Care / Hands-On Patient Care Date of Analysis: 6/5/13 Date of Revision/Review: 6/17/16, 07/2018, 06/2022 __________________________________________________________________________________________ Brief Description of Job Responsibilities: Perform venipuncture and capillary puncture on adult, neonatal and pediatric patient; assist in obtaining specimens from indwelling lines; instruct patients in all urine collection procedures and testing requirements; participate in education of students and new personnel; work with computer; communicate in a manner that promotes Clinic and laboratory professionalism as well as a comfortable experience for the patient. - Maintains patient confidentiality.
- Utilizes safety & standard precautions during patient contact and when handling contaminated materials.
- Prepares supplies to efficiently collect blood products and other specimens.
- Performs venipuncture and capillary punctures with good technique and expediently on patients according to established protocol.
- Performs laboratory reception duties including clerical functions, test ordering, and processing accurately and efficiently.
- Process the test orders in the computer system, utilizing both Epic and Sunquest according to laboratory protocols.
- Perform Point of care (POC) testing and result POC tests with accuracy in the laboratory information system.
- Identifies patients and labels specimens accurately & according to policy.
- Maintains knowledge regarding specimen test requirements and volumes for laboratory testing.
- Seeks guidance and direction as necessary as this position requires some supervision in performance of duties.
- Assists in care of patient prior to, during, and after collection.
- Instructs patients on non-blood specimen collections including urine collection with proper completion of forms.
- Knows how to prioritize STAT, urgent, and routine tests.
- Cleans and maintains equipment and workspace in work area.
- Inventories supplies for re-order. Orders and maintains supplies.
- Attends required meetings.
- Enhances professional growth and development through in-service meetings and education programs.
- Maintains CPR certification and other required training.

- Other duties as they relate to Occupational Health activities at the worksite and in the WorkMed program
Education/Experience/Certifications: - Minimum of High school diploma or GED
- Good phlebotomy skills especially with Pediatrics
- Graduate of accredited phlebotomy program or related field, preferred
- Phlebotomy certification preferred
- Prefer a minimum of one year of phlebotomy experience
- Knowledge of clinic and laboratory policies and procedures and medical terminology
- Knowledge of safety guidelines, laboratory tests, CPT codes, and insurance and diagnosis requirements
Non-Essential Duties: Other duties as assigned within scope of practice Typical Working Conditions: Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations, above normal noise levels, and other conditions common to a clinic environment. Work is performed in the laboratory area and involves constant contact with patients. Work may be stressful at times. Interaction with others is constant and interruptive. Typical Physical Demands: Requires full range of body motion. Work may require sitting for long periods of time; also stooping, bending, and stretching for files and supplies. Frequent standing and walking required for extended periods of time. Lifts and carries items weighing up to 40 pounds. Requires manual and finger dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, type, operate a calculator, telephone, copier, fax machine, and such other office equipment as necessary. Requires eye-hand coordination. Requires visual acuity correctable to 20/30, ability to differentiate colors, and hearing within normal range. - Unload and carry up to 40 lbs of supplies
- Push / pull patients with wheelchair multiple times daily
