Position Summary
This position is responsible for application of the appropriate diagnostic and procedural codes to individual patient medical records for data retrieval, analysis and claims processing. The responsibilities include, but are not limited to: timely charge entry and billing of same records, abstracts pertinent information from patient records into the computer system, assigns CPT, ICD9, or HCPCS codes. Queries physicians when code assignments are not straightforward or documentation in the record is inadequate, ambiguous, or unclear for coding purposes. Has effective communication with physicians, patients, co-workers and supervisor. Abides by the Standards of Ethical Coding as set forth by the American Health Information Management Association and adheres to official coding guidelines. This position functions according to the WRMC HIPAA guidelines. Keeps abreast of coding guidelines and reimbursement reporting requirements. Brings identified concerns to the supervisor or department director for resolution. The majority of time is spent sitting (up to 90 % of work time) with short distance walks (up to 10 % of work time).

Licenses/Certifications Required
Certified Coding Certificate preferred

Specific Educational and Skill Competencies Required
Ability to operate standard office equipment and effectively communicate with customers. Must have a high school diploma or GED. Knowledge of medical terminology and specialty coding practices are a must, and are usually demonstrated by a minimum of two years experience as a coder or strong training background in coding and reimbursement within a clinic setting.
