$100M+ industrial distribution company in the upper Midwest with 20 locations in six states is looking to identify a Purchasing Director. Distributes to retailers and contractors working in both commercial and residential applications in a multitude of segments. Ideal position for someone that works at a large distribution or manufacturing company that is looking to have the top job at a mid-sized distributor. Position will be located at the corporate office in Minneapolis, MN.

I. Primary Function

The Director of Purchasing is the leader of a department of 4-5 people. Plans and directs the organizations overall purchasing, negotiation and inventory planning initiatives, including inventory management, strategic sourcing, contract management and evaluates sales and supply chain data to forecast company-wide inventory placement and inventory levels. Collaborates with the Sales Team to ensure inventory levels are adequate and timely enough to support the companys sales goals, including new product introductions. Develops strategic plans to improve gross profit margin through optimized purchasing, preferred suppliers, rebate negotiations and implementing best practices across the company. Develops and implements KPIs to measure performance. Relies on extensive experience and judgment to lead the Purchasing Team in accomplishing their goals.

II. Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the VP of Sales and VP of Operations to review monthly, quarterly, and annual sales numbers to determine appropriate inventory levels at all branches. Directs the implementation of inventory management plans using S&OP and other methods to balance cash flow, branch space utilization and on time delivery to our customers.
  • Ensures ERP system is properly updated and maintained. Strategically aligns supply chain best practices across multiple sites focusing on systems integration and optimization, inventory control, and demand planning to ensure product is available to ship to our customers on time.
  • Leads and participates in supplier negotiations to develop profitable supply agreements which are favorable for the corporation and in line with corporate initiatives. Develops key sourcing strategies and implements throughout the corporation to drive cost reductions and/or profit improvement.
  • Analyze and implement supply chain processes to reduce cost, reduce risk and raise the quality of products.
  • Establishes, implements, and administers policies and procedures for purchasing and planning to ensure materials are available to support monthly, quarterly and annual sales plans.
  • Coaches, trains, and mentors Purchasing Team in areas of S&OP, forecasting, purchasing, negotiations, inventory management and supply chain scheduling to deliver continuous improvement while meeting corporate goals.
  • Collaborates with Branch Managers to ensure best practices in warehousing and logistics to ensure incoming and outgoing freight costs are managed well and FIFO is practiced consistently among all companies.
  • Directs the development of and implements KPIs for internal metrics and external supplier metrics. Develop and administers vendor management program to qualify new suppliers, reduce any risks and communicate vendor KPIs using vendor score cards and other best practices. KPIs should have positive customer and employee impact and be easy to track and regularly communicated to the operational team to facilitate improvement and excellence.
  • Collaborates with the VP of Operations and Corporate Controller to develop, implement and audits inventory control policies and procedures to include receiving, cycle counting and movement of goods through the facility, and adjustments. Directs and participates in cycle counting and physical inventory.
  • Work with Executives to develop yearly detailed Purchasing Team budget and monitor budget against actual results. Budgeted categories will include: operational headcount/payroll, freight in and freight out expenses.
  • Collaborate with the Leadership Team in the development and implementation of operational technology that improves inventory and purchasing performance.
  • Assists in identifying, recruiting and retaining a high-quality operational team members; promotes teamwork company-wide.
  • Resolve escalated purchasing with Sales and Operations Teams
  • Maintains knowledge of products, installation methods and product performance.
  • Collaborate with the sales and marketing teams to operationalize their sales, growth and profitability strategies, including new product introductions.
  • Ensure that messages provided by Purchasing Team are uniform and aligned with company strategies.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of the companys markets, competitors, and influencers.
  • Oversee administrative functions for the Purchasing Team including reports, training, analysis, technology rollout and any other administrative functions assigned by Executive Team.
  • Cultivate and maintain effective relationships and communication with key customers, strategic suppliers and service providers.
  • Participate in product portfolio evaluations, new product introductions and SKU rationalization efforts
  • Analyze market trends, promote, and secure new technology, or assets to enhance the sales teams effectiveness in growing sales and/or improving the customer experience.
  • Other duties and responsibilities related to the nature of the job may be assigned on a temporary or permanent basis as needed

QUALIFICATIONS

IV. Experience

  • 5-10 years managerial/supervisory experience with oversight responsibility in strategic material procurement, production planning, forecasting, S&OP and logistics.
  • Experience in the distribution industry desired
  • Experience working in a team environment
  • Extensive domestic and international sourcing experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of ERP systems and functionality.
  • Extensive contract management experience.
  • APICS CSCP or CPIM desired
  • On the job training may be required.

V. Education

  • Requires a Bachelors degree (BS/BA); Supply Chain Management or related discipline a plus.
  • Proficient with the Microsoft Suite.
