JOB DESCRIPTION

Supervisor- Surveying

Salt Lake City, UT

This position will supervise the activities of surveyors within the survey department.; identify and resolve the surveying related technical and non-technical issues related to the planning and surveying of distribution, transmission related facilities, systems and services. Work with engineers, right-of-way, environmental, and construction personnel to determine pipeline routes. Establishes and verifies rights-of-ways and properties for construction activities. Prepares legal descriptions for property and right-of-way purchases. Creates exhibits and drawings as a registered PLS. Stamps exhibits and drawings with PLS stamp.

As a supervisor, this position will be responsible for training, development and performance evaluations of their staff and will participate with the manager in hiring new or replacement staff in the department and is responsible for leading safety, cost, schedule, scope, resource management, budgeting and mentoring.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

This position requires the ability to make boundary line decisions; effectively plan and manage multiple activities, resources and time and adapt to changing priorities; communicate orally and in writing effectively; match and discriminate between colors; work independently, evaluate problems, make sound decisions and adapt to changing conditions and demands; respond to emergency conditions which may include changing flat tires, chaining up vehicles, operating jacks, performing minor maintenance and be comfortable driving in off-road conditions; read and understand topographical maps, ownership maps, deeds, and descriptions; carry GPS equipment and walk around work sites with uneven terrain; perform a variety of physically-strenuous, manual labor tasks, which may include using a shovel, climbing ladders and earthen inclines, accessing equipment above floor level, lifting and carrying heavy objects, and extensive walking.

  • 5+ years experience within natural gas construction, civil engineering, land surveying, or equivalent
  • Possession of a Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) License in Utah, additional states are preferred (Wyoming, Idaho, Colorado, California, New Mexico or Arizona)
  • Successful completion of college algebra 1050 and trigonometry 1060, plus survey specific mathematics
  • Demonstrate skill in surveying equipment use such as Global Positioning Systems, levels, total stations, robotic total stations and data collectors
  • Knowledge of and experience with Project Management practices
  • Surveying procedures and practices such as boundary law, mapping, drafting, coordinate systems and datums
  • Auto CAD/ Carlson, MicroStation, ESRI or 1 year experience in another related CAD.
  • Microsoft Office Suite
  • A valid driver license and an acceptable driving record.
  • Relating interpersonally with internal and external customers.
  • Must be able to work in different conditions; cold, heat, outdoors, and in office
  • Travel up to 25%
  • May require additional hours, holiday and/or weekend work for project completion or to meet deadlines

Education

  • Required Degree (equivalency not accepted in lieu of required degree):
    A two-year Associate of Applied Science with a major in Surveying degree (minimum required for licensure).
  • Preferred:
    A four-year survey degree is preferred. A degree or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated related experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred level of education
