- Brief Description
Brief Description of the Job
Operates an automated side loader waste collection truck equipped with Radio Frequency Identification software and tag reader hardware in addition to a robotic arm and grabber application that collects and disposes of residential municipal solid waste and recycling materials. Complies with all safety guidelines including inspection of equipment, use of personal protective equipment, following safe practices, and reporting safety issues to the appropriate supervisor(s). Assists other employees and departments during special events to collect and dispose of waste and recycling.
- Job Duties
Operate Solid Waste Heavy Equipment (80%): Operate right-side-drive automated side loader waste collection truck equipped with a robotic/mechanical arm with a claw application that reaches out, lifts, and dumps municipal solid waste and recycling materials contained in 95 gallon roll carts. Control a continuous motion of maneuvering the mechanical arm with a joystick mounted inside the cab of the truck and rocker switches located under the driver`s seat for outside-of-the-cab functions. Maneuver vehicle in and out of high traffic areas. Operate a console computer-operated function, which controls the Power-Take-Off (PTO), throttle and tailgate open/closing activities. Ensure truck is equipped with all necessary equipment for the day`s assignment including broom, dustpan, reflective triangles, shovel, fire extinguisher, LOCK OUT tag, hard hat, chock block and body props. Operate navigation system aids for solid waste and recycling collection routing purposes. Complete and submit records of the number of daily pick-ups, tonnage of loads, fuel usage, odometer readings, minor cost, and other records associated with collecting solid waste and recycling materials. Additionally as assigned, operate a variety of Solid Waste equipment, including but not limited to a Rear Loader Garbage Truck, Clam Truck, Roll-Off Truck, and Automated Leaf Vacuum Truck. Ensure equipment is properly fueled, lubricants are at appropriate levels, and tires are properly inflated. Wash equipment daily and clean cab area at least once a week.
Perform & Comply with Safety Measures (15%): Perform daily pre-and post-trip vehicle inspections and maintain accurate vehicle log. Inspect equipment prior to and after use in order to identify needed maintenance and report needs to supervisor or Fleet Division. Observe and listen to equipment during use to identify malfunctions or parts in need of replacement. When necessary shut down equipment to prevent further damage or hazards. Utilize proper body mechanics and ergonomics in performance of work. Use operating skills, learned safe practices and awareness of the surrounding area to avoid injury or damage to persons or property. Utilize spotters, flaggers or helpers as needed to maintain a safe working environment. When potentially unsafe conditions are observed make efforts to avoid or correct and notify responsible supervisor or safety representative in a timely manner.
Manage Waste Disposal (5%): Assist with after-hours special events waste collection. Convey basic information to the public when approached with questions.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Formal Education: High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Experience: Over two years of experience operating solid waste equipment is required. Must have experience operating right-side-drive vehicles.
Driver`s License Required: A valid Class B South Carolina CDL with air brake provisions is required.
Certifications and Other Requirements: DOT Medical Card is required.

Knowledge: Work requires a comprehensive practical knowledge of a technical field with use of analytical judgment and decision-making. Must be able to exercise independent thinking and the ability to conceptualize and develop new or improved procedures, techniques or ideas appropriate to the work environment. Work product primarily affects processes and program/functional areas within the department.
Machines, Tools, Equipment, and Work Aids: Two-way radio, maps, navigation system aids. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) software and hardware. Route optimization aids (Navigation Hardware).
Primary Work Location: Outdoors (Residential collections).
Environmental/Health and Safety Factors: Frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Majority of work performed outside or with exposure to risk. Daily exposure to extreme temperature, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration. Seasonal exposure to wetness and/or humidity. Occasional exposure to mechanical hazards and chemical hazards. Rare exposure to electrical hazards.
Protective Equipment Required: Steel-toed shoes, gloves (optional), safety vest, and safety glasses.
Continuously requires fine dexterity, sitting, reaching, vision, foot controls, hearing, twisting, and talking. Frequently requires walking, handling, kneeling, pushing/pulling, climbing, and bending. Occasionally requires standing, lifting, carrying, and crouching. Medium strength demands include exerting 20-50 pounds occasionally, 10 pounds frequently, or negligible amounts constantly AND/OR walking or standing to a significant degree.
Frequently requires working closely with others as part of a team, tedious or exacting work, and noisy/distracting environment. Occasionally requires time pressures, frequent change of tasks, irregular schedule/overtime, and performing multiple tasks simultaneously. Rarely requires emergency situations.
