Brief Description of the Job
Operates an Automated Leaf Vacuum truck for collecting leaves, grass clippings, and small loose yard trimmings for transport to a designated transfer station or disposal facility. Operates and drives additional solid waste vehicles when necessary. Complies with all safety guidelines including inspection of equipment, use of personal protective equipment, following safe practices, and reporting safety issues to the appropriate supervisor(s). Assists other employees and departments, and interacts with residents.
- Job Duties
Operate Solid Waste Heavy Equipment (80%): Operate an Automated Leaf Vacuum truck equipped as a right side of the road operating unit with a 10 ft. boom suction hose through residential and high traffic areas. Utilize mechanical joystick located inside vehicle cab to manipulate boom suction hose to collect leaves, grass, and loose yard waste trimmings. When not in use, during travel, ensure boom suction hose is secured in cradle holding location and does not swing free. Utilize knowledge of hydraulic machinery and Power Take-Off (PTO) provisions for large vehicles to control boom/suction hose movements, rear door locks, dump body, and engine throttle. Operate console with computer-controlled functions/switches, to control PTO, throttle, and tailgate open/closing activities. Utilize electronic display screen which acts as a manual for operating the vehicle. Keep records of the loads and tonnage weight for trips to disposal facility. Utilize written hard copied or electronic directions to follow and stay on route. When necessary, utilize a non-automated vehicle with pull behind leaf vacuum to perform duties. When necessary, direct assigned helpers and maintain safe environment and awareness of welfare of helpers. Unclog suction hose throughout the day ensuring that at no time the PTO is engaged during the process. Additionally as assigned, operate a variety of Solid Waste equipment, including but not limited to Rear Loader Garbage Truck, Clam Truck, and Roll-Off Truck. Ensure truck is equipped with necessary equipment for day`s assignment including hardhat, hearing and eye protection, rake, and suction hose clean-out rod.
Perform & Comply with Safety Measures (15%): Perform daily pre-and post-trip vehicle inspections and maintain accurate vehicle log. Inspect equipment prior to and after use in order to identify needed maintenance and report needs to supervisor or Fleet Division. Observe and listen to equipment during use to identify malfunctions or parts in need of replacement. When necessary shut down equipment to prevent further damage or hazards. Utilize proper body mechanics and ergonomics in performance of work. Use operating skills, learned safe practices and awareness of the surrounding area to avoid injury or damage to persons or property. Utilize spotters, flaggers or helpers as needed to maintain a safe working environment. When potentially unsafe conditions are observed make efforts to avoid or correct and notify responsible supervisor or safety representative in a timely manner.
Manage Waste Disposal (5%): Assist with after-hours special events waste collection. Convey basic information to the public when approached with questions.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Formal Education: High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Experience: Over one year of experience operating solid waste equipment is required. Must have experience operating right-side-drive vehicles.
Driver`s License Required: A valid Class B South Carolina CDL with air brake provisions is required.
Certifications and Other Requirements: DOT Medical Card is required.

Knowledge: Work requires a comprehensive practical knowledge of a technical field with use of analytical judgment and decision-making. Must be able to exercise independent thinking and the ability to conceptualize and develop new or improved procedures, techniques or ideas appropriate to the work environment. Work product primarily affects processes and program/functional areas within the department.
Machines, Tools, Equipment, and Work Aids: Two-way radio, maps, navigation system aids. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) software and hardware. Route optimization aids (Navigation Hardware).
Primary Work Location: Outdoors (Residential collections).
Environmental/Health and Safety Factors: Frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Majority of work performed outside or with exposure to risk. Daily exposure to extreme temperature, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration. Seasonal exposure to wetness and/or humidity. Occasional exposure to mechanical hazards and chemical hazards. Rare exposure to electrical hazards.
Protective Equipment Required: Steel-toed shoes, gloves (optional), safety vest, and safety glasses.
Continuously requires fine dexterity, sitting, reaching, vision, foot controls, hearing, twisting, and talking. Frequently requires walking, handling, kneeling, pushing/pulling, climbing, and bending. Occasionally requires standing, lifting, carrying, and crouching. Medium strength demands include exerting 20-50 pounds occasionally, 10 pounds frequently, or negligible amounts constantly AND/OR walking or standing to a significant degree.
Frequently requires working closely with others as part of a team, tedious or exacting work, and noisy/distracting environment. Occasionally requires time pressures, frequent change of tasks, irregular schedule/overtime, and performing multiple tasks simultaneously.
