Brief Description of the Job
Under the general direction of the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor, oversees electrical repairs and maintenance for assigned City facilities. Exercises a moderate level of discretion in the interpretation and application of policies, standard operating procedures and rules to determine appropriate courses of action in the performance of job responsibilities. Installs and monitors performance of installed electrical equipment for hazards, adjustments, or replacement. Repairs, installs, replaces, and tests electrical circuits, equipment, and appliances using appropriate tools and testing instruments. Repairs and maintains motor control centers and programmable logic controls (1000 volt and below). Plans electrical secondary system additions or modifications. Performs maintenance repairs using bucket truck and scissor lift. Assists other specialized trades to include plumbing, HVAC, landscaping, and general maintenance.
- Job Duties
Perform Electrical Maintenance (55%): Utilize appropriate hand and power tools and diagnostic equipment to repair, install, replace, and test 1000 volt and below electrical circuits, equipment and appliances. Diagnose and repair electrical controls, industrial motor control centers, and programmable logic controllers for secondary systems 1000 volt and below. Effectively plan and estimate work in most efficient manner to minimize facility downtime. Lead and train other maintenance staff in basic electrical repair and operation of electrical systems. Stay abreast of industry developments in electrical repair and maintenance. Work with the Citys electrical inspectors and Building Official as needed to meet ICC standards.
Maintain Street Lighting Equipment (30%): Troubleshoot equipment and oversee maintenance of outdoor street and/or garage lighting. Repair and/or replace broken/defective lighting parts and systems. Procure and install new lighting equipment as necessary.
Support Inclement Weather Operations (5%): Work outside of regular schedule, throughout inclement weather conditions (i.e. snow and ice). Mix and spread sand and salt for ice removal in high traffic areas as necessary. May be assigned to operate sanders, loaders, snowplows, and other specific equipment necessary to clear and maintain roads and walkways Wash brine and salt off equipment after use.
Ensures Workplace Safety (5%): Proactively identify, remove and/or report potential safety hazards. Take steps to address, remove, or report hazardous conditions or items. Comply with City, State, and Federal safety procedures and protocols in the performance of job duties. Ensure proper use of equipment and materials.
Assist with Other Maintenance Disciplines (5%): Assist with other maintenance disciplines as needed to include plumbing, HVAC, landscaping, and general maintenance.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Formal Education: Associate degree or at least four years of equivalent experience in electrical repair and maintenance.
Experience: Over four years of experience in troubleshooting electrical systems is required.
Drivers License Required: Class D South Carolina license.
Certifications and Other Requirements: Must have Municipal Association of SC Master Electrician License. HVAC journeyman license is preferred. Computer experience preferred.

- Read, comprehend, follow, and enforce safety procedures
- Read commercial electrical blueprints and system manuals.
- Make mathematical calculations and draw logical conclusions.
- Prepare reports and estimates for repair work and equipment recommendations.
- Communicate basic information to the public in a respectful and knowledgeable manner.
- Communicate maintenance requirements to outside vendors and contractors.
- Use electrical meters, hand tools, bucket truck and scissor lift.
- Use a laptop computer and smart phone with internet access.
Primary Work Location: Outdoors (rooftop, ground equipment areas), indoor electrical/mechanical rooms, attics, and closets.
Environmental/Health and Safety Factors: Frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Majority of work performed outside or with exposure to risk. Weekly exposure to wetness and/or humidity, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, and physical hazards. Frequent exposure to mechanical hazards, chemical hazards, electrical hazards, and fire hazards. Occasional exposure to explosives, communicable diseases, and physical danger or abuse.
Protective Equipment Required: Safety glasses, hard hat, steel-toed shoes, protective clothing including arc-flash equipment, and hearing protection.
Physical Demands: Continuously requires vision and hearing. Frequently requires standing, walking, lifting, carrying, kneeling, reaching, pushing/pulling, climbing, bending, crouching, and talking. Occasionally requires fine dexterity, handling, sitting, crawling, foot controls, balancing, and twisting. Heavy strength demands include exerting 50-75 pounds occasionally, 25-50 pounds frequently, or from 10 up to 20 pounds constantly.
Mental Demands: Frequently requires frequent change of tasks and working closely with others as part of a team. Occasionally requires time pressures, emergency situations, irregular schedule/overtime, performing multiple tasks simultaneously, tedious or exacting work, and noisy/distracting environment.
