Fulfills all duties and expectations for the registered pharmacist position. In addition develops and possesses advanced knowledge and skills and serves as a resource for pharmacists physicians and others in this area. Serves as a leader with respect to pharmacy practice within the pharmacy and throughout the medical center. Specifically provides expertise and focus for the Medical Center regarding medication therapy for a broad variety of patients. Raises the level of knowledge of Pharmacy staff regarding medication therapy for patients. Also maintains knowledge and understanding of experimental protocols that are used frequently within the Medical Center. Essential Functions: Other duties may be assigned. Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of the job. Continually plans develops and implements improvements to service and quality of pharmaceutical care at VCRMC. Identifies initiatives which can improve quality and/or reduce costs for the Medical Center within the institutional mission. Provides informational and educational services to patients physicians nurses pharmacists and other health care professionals pertaining to pharmaceutical care. Makes recommendations to Pharmacy and Medical Center Leadership on issues pertaining to medication therapy. This could include therapeutic interchange programs formulary recommendations and pharmacoeconomic implications of formulary changes. Demonstrates creativity and initiative in decision making and problem solving and acts as a resource for other staff members. Facilitates decision making at the appropriate levels. Promotes positive morale and teamwork by interacting effectively with members of the Pharmacy other service areas of the hospital and customers. Enhances QWL efforts to positively contribute to a motivated team oriented work force. Provides feedback to management staff regarding employee competency. Assists management with employee education with regard to departmental policies and procedures and with conducting staff meetings to enhance communication involvement and teamwork. Assists management in determining optimal pharmacist staffing. Assists management with new pharmacist orientation scheduling and individualizing new employee training new employee and ongoing competency evaluation. Assists director manager and supervisor in maintaining compliance with applicable JCAHO and professional standards as well as state and federal laws / regulations. Works with leadership and other specialists in coordinating clinical pharmacy issues affecting the pharmacy and the Medical Center. Maintains an area of clinical specialty. Participates in hospital committee activities as indicated. Participates in Formulary and Medication Usage Evaluation as indicated. Prepares written background information evaluates scientific literature formulates proposals and presents information and recommendations for medications to the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and other groups as needed. Works with the medical staff to streamline the ordering process and optimize patient safety. Assists in reviewing standing orders. Discusses appropriate changes with physicians. Responds to all customers (patients residents employees physicians) and coworkers with respect and courtesy. Maintains the knowledge and skills necessary to meet the expectations and duties of the Registered Pharmacist Position working in this capacity approximately 20 shifts per year. Provides at least 3 staff development programs annually within the Medical Center. At least 2 programs should be provided to pharmacy staff. Presents current literature for review and discussion at journal club at least 3 times per year. Contributes written articles for publication in pharmacy newsletters. (e.g. Clinical News Medication Moments.) Assists in providing support to the pharmacy staff by being on-call on a rotating basis. Serves as a preceptor and mentor to pharmacy students interns and residents. Courteously and correctly (includes identifying one's self by name) answers the telephone by the 4th ring. Other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience:
Doctor of Pharmacy Degree with Kansas licensure or BS Pharmacy Degree with equivalent experience in area of specialty Residency or equivalent experience previous clinical experience in area of specialty and recent experience in direct patient care activities and pharmacotherapy. Board Certification in Pharmacotherapy is highly desired.
