Engineering Manager Embedded Systems

Job Location: Portland, OR

Seeking an Engineering Manager-Embedded Systems to support the growth in electrification of products across all company divisions. This position is strategic, tactical and hands-on, and leads and mentors a group of electrical engineers, designers, and technicians working to develop new products and support current products in the consumer goods industry. This position will also be a key contributor to the development of new technologies, competencies, and processes that align to business objectives.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage, develop, guide, influence, and coach engineering staff (hardware and firmware engineers, and technician) to include establishing individual performance objectives and provide performance reviews
  • Use Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) tools to lead the product development process regarding electrical engineering from voice of customer (VOC), house of quality (HOQ), design failure mode effects analysis (DFMEA), validation plan development and execution and production launch
  • Lead and support product and process integration of current and new technology development to enable better products to market, faster and of the highest quality
  • Develop products that are robust to manufacturing variation and customer use
  • Assess needs and identify required resources for the electrical engineering group, provide professional development and training, identify and close gaps in engineering competencies and skill sets
  • Develop and manage test regimes and work with suppliers to develop necessary test equipment to assure reliability levels and quality are implemented
  • Generate written protocols and reports that clearly define and document project requirements and schedules, accurate documentation of concepts, designs, drawings, and processes
  • Lead collaborative efforts and maintain open communication with management, engineers, technicians, outside consultants, marketing, accounting, sourcing, manufacturing, product design and suppliers/customers during the product development and implementation phase
  • Manage departmental budget to plan
  • Foster innovation and contribute to the intellectual property position of the Company via invention and patent application
  • Partner with marketing, sales, and external customers to define requirements for new products
  • Facilitate regulatory and standards certification of new products per applicable standards
  • Prepare and conduct regular design reviews
  • Develop and maintain best practices where warranted

Requirements:

  • 4-year degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline required; Masters degree preferred
  • 7+ years of experience in software engineering roles
  • 3+ years managing teams who have shipped and support scalable production systems
  • Self-motivated to lead teams, encourage best practices and constantly improve
  • Proficient in the use of electrical laboratory test equipment and CAE modeling experience preferred
  • Experience developing electrical test regimens
  • Knowledge of embedded electronics and software development required
  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes required to design robust solutions to manufacturing requirements
  • Must be able to translate customer needs to product specifications
  • Be a creative thinker and adept at analytical problem solving and making data-driven decisions
  • Results orientated; able to translate specific goals into action and follow through to achieve goals
  • Strong oral and written communication skills at all levels of the organization; able to express oneself in technical and non-technical terms
  • Collaborative and effective team player, able to work with teams that are globally dispersed
  • Takes initiative to seek and act on development activities for self and to improve the organizations performance
  • Exceptional organization, time management and multi-tasking skills are essential
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Must be willing and able for domestic and international travel several times per year
