Introduction
The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a Stationary Engineer - Watch Engineer.
Responsibilities
Operate, monitor, and maintain all physical plant equipment including water chillers, steam and hot water boilers, air compressors, generators, cooling towers, air handlers, and HVAC systems. Perform preventive and corrective maintenance. Check equipment rooms and maintain operating logs. Respond to Building Automation System alarms, utility interruptions, and facility emergencies. Perform duties as Watch Engineer. Operate and monitor all physical plant equipment. Regularly check mechanical and machine rooms to ensure full service to all facilities and special areas. Start-up and changeover equipment. Complete minor preventive maintenance work and machinery history logs. Respond to facility service outages by making immediate repairs or initiating recall of appropriate personnel. Perform general preventive maintenance and repair services to all physical plant operating equipment, hydraulic machinery, and mechanical systems during non-standard working hours (evenings, shift work, including weekends). Maintain records and monitor equipment performance. Monitor and control equipment operations through the building automation system and respond to alarms. Reset equipment or perform emergency repairs as required to restore normal facility operations. Secure and restore utility services as required during emergency situations or unscheduled outages.
NOTE: Performance of all of the job responsibilities cited above in all campus buildings or structures, including those which house laboratories which handle special materials, is an essential function of this job.
Qualifications
Required:
Equivalent of 4-7 years of formal on-the-job training (each year of accredited school equates to one year of training) acquired at the journeyman level or beyond. Second Grade Engineer's license. Ability to use hand tools, power tools, and test equipment. Working knowledge of applicable Plumbing and Mechanical codes. Ability to read blueprints, sketches, O&M Manuals, and diagrams. Independent work in both routine and emergency situations. Effective communications skills. Valid drivers license. Capable user of Personal Computers. Basic electrical skills. Applicants subject to background investigation & driving record evaluation.
Desired:
First Grade Engineer's license. HVAC/R journeyman's license. Certified welder. Familiarity with Johnson Controls METASYS and DSC building automation systems and computerized maintenance management system (MAXIMO). Experience in emergency response, hazardous materials handling, applicable OSHA/EPA regulations. CFC Certification. Backflow prevention certification.
Special Work Conditions
Assigned to Watch Engineer rotating shift (8am-4pm; 4pm-12am; 12am-8am). Valid state driver's license. Personal protective equipment for access to construction sites. Operate vehicles and industrial equipment, utilize all PPE, outside work during inclement weather; overtime as required. Significant walking required to complete rounds. Assist other trades as directed.
