Introduction
The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a Design, Development and Integration Engineer.
Responsibilities
Job Description - Provide technical and project leadership for design, development, integration and analysis of technologies for DOD and DHS Homeland Protection applications including detection and defeat of Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosive (CBRNE) threats, Non Intrusive Inspection (NII) and security checkpoint screening systems.
Duties - Lead and/or contribute to the design, analysis, integration, development and evaluation of a wide range of electromechanical devices, complex IED and CBRNE detection and defeat systems and NII / Checkpoint screening technologies. Support lab and field testing of these types of systems. Develop embedded systems and data acquisition systems and support development of wireless networks, sensor integration following principles of structured software architecture design, systems engineering, proof-of-concept design and rapid prototyping. Assemble prototypes, and integrate COTS and third-party systems. Develop, implement and document suitable CONOPS and test scenarios for technologies under development and evaluation. Research and apply relevant existing and emerging commercial and military standards to the equipment under evaluation. Prepare complete technical documentation for all activities including design documents, analysis reports, test plans, formal reports and presentations. Provide mentorship and technical guidance to assist less experienced staff in requirements, design, analysis, testing and documentation issues. Maintain an expert level knowledge base in CBRNE threat detection and defeat capabilities as well as an area of technical competency.
Qualifications
Required - B.S. or M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering or closely related technical degree. Candidate must have demonstrated technical competency and at least 7 years of experience in design, development and analysis of RF, EO/IR, imaging, wireless, sensors or CBRNE technologies. Excellent organizational, verbal and written and communication skills. Must be able to interact and communicate effectively with a multidisciplinary team, sponsors and external organizations. Demonstrated systems development and engineering design skills as well as test planning and data collection experience. Applicants selected will be subject to a Government security investigation and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include US citizenship.
Desired - M.S. or Ph.D. Degree in Electrical Engineering or closely related technical degree. Ten or more years of demonstrated experience in rapidly solving difficult technical and procedural problems with substantial expertise in IED, CBRNE, wireless and sensor and integration applications. Experience with Windows & Linux programming, LabView, DLL interfaces, and DSP and/or FPGA devices. Demonstrated technical lead and/or project manager experience.
Special Work Conditions
Local and CONUS long distance travel (~25%).
