Introduction
The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a Network Engineer.
Responsibilities Provide technical support for the network, server and applications ITC provides on the campus-wide classified network infrastructure (SCNI). Gather requirements; design, implement and maintain servers and end-user systems on government sponsored classified networks, and perform system administration tasks for key SCNI services including Active Directory, and Exchange. This will involve interaction with sponsors, end-users, and other stakeholders to determine the best technical solution allowed within DoD security configuration requirements and policies for that client/closed area. Create and maintain detailed documentation on when and how systems were built. Configure, maintain and support the network switches, routers, firewalls, and security systems on the SCNI application networks. Monitor security on all networks, including intrusion detection and host based vulnerability probing. Create and maintain detailed documentation on the network configuration and security settings. Investigate, document and report all security findings to appropriate security personnel. Work on other duties as assigned including general system maintenance (uploading/downloading of data files; managing user accounts; performing weekly system audits, backups, and antivirus updates; patching both Linux/Unix and Windows systems; and upgrades/ troubleshooting as needed), desk-side and phone user-support, and delivering security awareness training for local system administrators.
Qualifications Required: BS in IT related field and a minimum of two years of relevant IT professional experience. Five years if relevant IT experience may be substituted in lieu of a degree. At least two years of experience with Windows hardware, software and networking. Candidate must have had experience working with desktops, laptops, servers, and network switches; performed move, add, and change tasks on both fiber and copper cable plants; and have a general understanding of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, and Active Directory.
Independent, self-starting problem solver with strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to multitask and make good decisions, determine priorities and meet deadlines. Able to work effectively independently, with customers, and as part of a small team.
Active Security Clearance required.
Desired: Knowledge of DoD security configuration requirements and NISPOM policies.
MCSE Certification. Microsoft Exchange Mail experience.
