Introduction
The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a Composites Fabrication Technician.

Responsibilities
Fabrication, assembly and delivery of high-quality parts primarily using reinforced composites fabrication technologies combined with polymer molding and adhesive bonding processes. Advanced composites lay-up and fabrication -- prep tooling, cut pre-preg or dry fabric per engineering drawings or instructions, lay-up onto tooling, vacuum bag, run autoclave cure, and demold parts. Trimming and machining -- fabricate trim tooling; trim and drill molded plastic and composite parts to engineering drawings using hand and machine tools. Assembly and bonding --prepare surfaces, perform bonding operations for assemblies and test coupons. Prototype molded polymer parts --prepare models, add necessary features or details, build molds, and mold parts. Equipment/lab maintenance -- conduct regular maintenance on process equipment and tools, maintain clean work space, follow appropriate safety procedures.

Qualifications

Required:
1-3 years experience in composite part fabrication (autoclave, hot press and/or RTM) and adhesive bonding. Able to read engineering drawings. Good dexterity and hand skills for manual detailing of parts. Knowledge and practice of safe laboratory procedures in handling chemicals (resins, solvents, foams, etc.) and safe, proper operation of power tools. Willing to learn combined with a good work ethic, the ability to multi-task, and effective communication skills.

Desired:
Experience in machining (mill and lathe work). Experience with general polymer molding techniques. Creative talents (photography, sculpting, mechanical concepts/inventions).

Special Work Conditions
Use of PPE (respirator, safety glasses, latex/nitrile gloves)

Security
