The OB Scrub Technologist is a member of the obstetrical healthcare team and is under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse. This position is responsible for maintaining the integrity, safety and efficiency of the sterile field throughout the surgical procedure. Knowledge of and experience with sterile technique qualify the scrub to prepare and arrange instruments and supplies to facilitate the surgical procedure. This position must anticipate, plan for, and respond to the needs of the Obstetrician/surgeon and other team members by constantly monitoring the sterile field. Manual dexterity and physical stamina are required. Knowledge of instrumentation shall be maintained at an expert level. Additional duties to include: performing indirect and direct patient care of the neonate and female patients under the direct supervision of the RN, providing patient care support, maintenance of nursing unit, housekeeping and dietary tasks, clerical support for the nursing unit, and assistance with vaginal deliveries. Other important assets include a stable temperament, ability to work under pressure, a keen sense of responsibility, and a concern for accuracy in performing all duties. This position has exposure to body fluids, radiation and communicable disease. Majority of time is spent standing and / or walking short distances, with frequent lifting, carrying, and pushing/pulling of up to 100 lbs. A culturally and linguistically diverse patient population is served including antenatal, intrapartum and postpartum women from adolescents to adults, and well newborns. Availability required for call assignments on a scheduled basis.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED Certification as a Scrub Technologist or Arkansas Licensed Practical Nurse or licensed in a state that has enacted the RN/LPN NLC and CPR
SPECIFIC EDUCATIONAL AND SKILL COMPETENCIES REQUIRED FOR THIS POSITION Basic competency is expected to be attained within 4-8 months as evidenced by 85% achievement in all areas: Competency to maintain an orderly surgical field, preventing contamination of the field by the strict practice of aseptic technique; protects self, team members and environment by following universal precautions; participates in sponge, sharps, instrument counts as prescribed by departmental policy/procedure; is constantly alert to the safety of the patient; is knowledgeable about surgical procedures and has the ability to anticipate surgeons needs and to serve as surgical assistant as required. This position requires the scrub tech to receive and transfer medications and other prescriptive items on the sterile field (from a licensed nurse to a surgeon) under direct supervision by the surgeon and / or circulating RN.
