The University of Arkansas is the state’s land-grant institution and is located in one of the fastest growing and most dynamic regions of the country. The UofA is a major center of theoretical and applied research which provides a wide range of public services to people throughout the state and the nation.

The UofA is located in Fayetteville, in Northwest Arkansas, at the rolling foothills of the Ozark Mountains. The temperate four-season climate is very pleasant and has attracted an approximate population of 65,000 residents. Recreational opportunities abound throughout the region.

Fayetteville and the surrounding community boast a low crime rate, low unemployment rates and an outstanding public school system.

Our department prides itself on an extremely collegial environment. At present, there are 16 full and part-time faculty in the department, with active research programs in biotechnology, environmental technology, membrane and supercritical fluids separations, mixing, hazards assessment and modeling and electronics materials. In addition to seeking post graduate educational opportunities (including medical school), our students (approximately 200 undergraduate and 30 graduate) typically accept employment opportunities in Arkansas and the SE/SW region of the US encompassing the following: government, military/defense, consulting, paper, chemical, cosmetics, medical and petroleum.

Description:
The Ralph E. Martin Department of Chemical Engineering invites applications for a part-time instructor position to begin on August 17, 2009 to act as the department’s Safety Officer. Responsibilities will include: provide safety training for all faculty, staff, and students in the department (particularly in research and undergraduate instructional labs); monitor procurement and use of chemicals including chemical inventory and waste disposal; ensure that all relevant state and federal regulations are followed (including appropriate documentation); coordinate safety related activities with other campus staff; and serve as a safety resource for the department including conduct of regular laboratory audits and inspections.

Candidates should have experience with relevant regulations and a good background in safety training.

Minimum Requirements:
The minimum qualifications for this position are a bachelor’s of science degree in chemical engineering or chemistry.
