Job Duties:
Graduate Assistantship: Physiology, Biology, and molecular mechanisms of resistance to herbicides in Palmer Amaranth

Palmer amaranth is a major threat to crop production in the Southern U.S. especially because of the evolution of herbicide-resistant populations. Sustainable management of Palmer amaranth hinges on a thorough understanding of its biology, physiology, and evolutionary dynamics. Applications are sought from highly motivated, qualified students who are interested in conducting research in this area. This is a collaborative research endeavor between the University of Arkansas and Bayer CropScience.

Graduate assistantship is available for a qualified M.S. or Ph.D. student to conduct research on Palmer amaranth. There is an opportunity to learn research techniques in molecular biology, weed physiology and biology, and population genetics. The student will also be trained on field research implementation including pesticide application, crop management, and data collection and analysis. The student is expected to at least submit a research article to a refereed journal prior to graduation. Assistantship stipend starts at $15,000 per year. Tuition fee is waived. Standard of living in Fayetteville, Arkansas is very reasonable. The University of Arkansas Fayetteville campus is nestled in the Ozark Mountain Range with various cultural, sports, and indoor and outdoor recreational activities. The position is available in the fall of 2009 or spring 2010, whenever a suitable candidate is found.
