Job Summary
Works under the supervision of the Clinical Nurse Manager and maintains consistent effective communication. The Charge Nurse assesses, plans, implements, evaluates and supervises individual patient care according to unit policies. Responsible for staff scheduling, assignments, coordination of patient care in collaboration with physicians to achieve quality outcomes. Responsible for immediate problem resolution to improve patient/staff/physician satisfaction. Will assist Clinical Nurse Manager in prioritizing patient care by enhancing critical thinking skills in order to facilitate high standard patient care. Responsible for continuous compliance with Joint Commission standards to include monitoring of documentation and maintaining of a safe environment. Performs other duties as assigned.

Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Serves as the "Role Model" and demonstrates excellent professional/clinical skills and utilization of the Nursing process of direct and indirect patient care which includes assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care to meet patient needs and improve patient outcomes.
2. Responsible for daily assignments of staff and readjusting assignments according to patient acuity. Assists manager in completing staff work schedules.
3. Responsible for immediate and direct patient complaint intervention and resolution.
4. Maintains an excellent rapport with the Physicians anticipates needs and facilitates quality patient care with Physicians. Undertakes immediate intervention of Physician issues.
5. Participates in ongoing evaluation of patients, assuring efficiency of communication with patients, follow-up and flow through the system. To include daily rounds on the floors to assess patients and possible critical situations to determine patient care needs and outcomes.
6. Participates in education, orientation and staff development as needed. Uses coaching methods and mentoring.
7. Maintains open communication with Clinical Nurse Manager and staff to maintain quality of care, including collection of data/information to support quality improvement projects for the units. Also to include continuous monitoring of documentation and maintains a safe environment.
8. Assists in the identification of patient/family educational needs, develops teaching strategies and assists with meeting those needs.
9. Participates in collection and preparation of reports of patient care activities. Will participate in conducting nursing audits, taking part in quality nursing improvement activities.
10. Oversight of charging and documentation accuracy, including review and analysis of effectiveness of nursing interventions.
11. Assists Clinical Nurse Manager with staff evaluations, initiates and participates in staff mentoring and guidance regarding patient care and performance issues.
12. Assists with updating policies, procedures and protocols to meet current patient needs and quality standards.
13. Schedule will be flexible to accommodate needs and support of off shifts, to include weekends. Will participate as unit representative on assigned committees.
14. Authority to address and verbally counsel unit employees in manager's absence.
15. Coordinates patient care with ancillary departments to include Lab, Radiology, Cardiopulmonary, Social Workers, etc., internal and external facilitation of all entities involved, and other health care team members.
16. Will have in-depth knowledge of Joint Commission rules and guidelines and assist in preparation of unit/department for scheduled and impromptu surveys.
17. Will be trained to assist with interviewing process and hiring of new employees for unit/department.
18. Attends a minimum of 20 hours of continuing education annually and attends mandatory hospital in-services. Maintains professional standards by participating in in-services, committees, etc. Maintains current BLS and ACLS.
19. Employee will support and participate in relationship based care model.
20. Employee will support shared governance and participate when appropriate.

Job Specifications:
1. Education:
Nursing degree (BSN preferred) from an accredited school of nursing.
2. Licensure/Certification:
Licensed to practice professional nursing in the state of Wyoming.
3. Experience:
Minimum of 2-3 years experience in hospital nursing. Knowledge of the hospital structure, nursing policy and procedures.
4. Interpersonal Skills:
Ability to communicate effectively and interact positively with patient, patient's family, staff and physicians so as to promote positive patient care.
5. Essential Technical/Motor Skills:
Ability to function independently. Computer knowledge.
6. Essential Physical Requirements:
Able to stand, sit or walk for long periods of time, able to lift/transfer/ carry (at least 50 lbs) using appropriate assistive devices.
7. Essential Mental Abilities:
Ability to assess a patient's condition, formulate plan of care, select appropriate interventions, evaluate patient's response to plan of care and to explain to patient/family about this process. Requires higher level of mental faculties accompanied by short and long term memory. Ability to adapt to flexible work routine/schedule.
8. Essential Sensory Requirements:
Ability to visually read written records and assess patients. Ability to speak clearly and hear well in order to communicate with patients, families, physicians and staff regarding patient's condition and care needs.
9. Exposure to Hazards:
Occasional possible exposure to body fluids, chemotherapy agents and radiation in certain areas.
Age-Specific Care Criteria:
The employee at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center is expected to provide nursing care to in patients, out patients, and home health patients of all ages as defined in the scope of service of their assigned unit. In order to assure patients and their families of maximal quality and efficacy in the provision of such care, the Clinical Services Division has defined age specific criteria for each departmental job description. The criteria will be used to determine appropriate patient assignment for the staff.
