SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for the selection and continuous genetic improvement of Cobb pedigree lines of broiler breeder chickens. Measures and analyzes both quantitative and qualitative broiler and breeder performance traits of economic and welfare value to Cobb customers. These include traits such as body weight, disease resistance, part and breast yields, meat quality, feed conversion, broiler defects, leg health, egg production, hatchability and egg and chickquality. Applies the principles of quantitative genetics to the estimation of trait genetic parameters, trait breeding values and the selection of elite breeding individuals. Performs research and experiments to study the inheritance of new selection traits and to determine the effects of new selection methods.
Supervises and is responsible for the following pedigree activities within both product and research lines:
Broiler trait measurements and statistical analysis; Pedigree hatch measurements and statistical analysis; Phenotypic broiler measurements and statistical analysis; Breeder trait collection and statistical analysis; Feed conversion measurement and statistical analysis; Carcass yield measurements and statistical analysis; Health and physiology measurements and statistical analysis; Meat quality measurements and statistical analysis; Selection and data recording training and supervision; Genetic parameter calculations for selection traits; Breeding value estimation; Multiple trait selection for quantitative traits; Pedigree line comparisons; Genetic trend analysis and prediction of future performance; Internal and external research project management; New trait researchand development; and World regional genetic representative.
Research computer and statistical responsibilities:
Hardware selection and maintenance; Software evaluation and recommendations; SAS and database computer programs; Pedigree database maintenance and backup; and Statistical consulting.
Market support activities include:
Genetic presentations to customers; Preparation of product sales literature; World regional genetic representation; and Liaison with marketing.
Other duties include preparation of the following:
Monthly summaries of R&D activities and results; annual reports which summarize genetic progress for each line, including predictions of future genetic progress, and final research project results for internal and external distribution.
REQUIREMENTS:
Education:
Doctoral degree (Ph.D.) or equivalent in quantitative genetics or animal breeding.
Experience:
Three plus years related experience.
Computer Skills:
Requires advanced computer and statistical skills.
Travel:
Will travel up to 15% of the time.

None.
