Position Overview
The Design Engineer will be responsible for researching, designing, validating and bringing new products to market in a fast-paced environment. The successful candidate will collaborate directly with sales and customers in determining requirements and addressing technical inquiries during the product lifecycle. This person will also work closely with manufacturing during the production of the product to ensure all requirements and design tolerance levels are achieved. The Design Engineer will report directly to the Engineering Supervisor.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Design, validate, and bring new products to market.
- Review drawings of new and repeat jobs from customers, checking customer specifications to determine the most desirable design for customer.
- Optimize designs for manufacturing, supply chain and quality teams.
- At the request of, or in conjunction with, Sales personnel, research materials and design alternatives to satisfy project requirements, which may include prototyping for design purposes.
- Uses varied sources and methods for research.
- Works closely with Manufacturing to assure methods chosen for manufacturing the product are most compatible with existing processes.
- Ensure drawings and specifications are available for review by Manufacturing Engineering.
- Quotes product through analysis of parts and machine requirements based on applicable specifications.
- Follows department procedures such as maintaining drawing standards and drawing control.
- Responsible for Engineering Change Requests.

Education and Work Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar discipline.
- Minimum 4 years’ experience in a design engineering capacity with a manufacturing environment.
- Knowledge of sound engineering practices/techniques including the ability to work with customer design requirements and to make the best use of in-house processes to meet customer needs.
- Research skills, including the ability to understand the requirements intended end product and uses many resources creatively such as the Internet and personal contacts to determine alternatives to existing designs or methods of manufacturing.
- Computer usage including basic skills to be able to manipulate CAD 3-D, resulting in understandable drawing that can then be transferred to a Designer for completion and ability to use spreadsheet programs.
- Knowledge of various modeling design packages, including Solid Works for design collaboration with customers.
- Investigation/information gathering skills including the ability to determine customer needs and gather and document facts to support recommendations of action.
- Written and verbal communication skills including the ability to clearly provide communication and make presentations to internal groups and/or customers.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to provide work direction for others.

Preferred Skills
- Familiarity with quality improvement and ISO requirements highly preferred.
- Industry experience in automotive sector preferred.
- Experience working with metals is preferred.
