Job Description and Essential Functions

Job Title/Position: Ophthalmic Technician

Job Classification: Direct Patient Care / Hands-On Patient Care

Brief Description of Job Responsibilities:

  1. Maintain and stock all rooms
  2. Clean and maintain instruments
  3. Order supplies
  4. Prepare patients to see the ophthalmologist including patient education for procedures and surgery
  5. Order and dispense contact lenses
  6. Triage patient phone calls within scope of practice
  7. Communicate with providers about patient calls received
  8. Perform patient exams and diagnostic tests
  9. Install eye drops
  10. Prepare patients for minor in-office surgery and laser procedures
  11. Call in prescription refills as directed
  12. Assist in scheduling patients
  13. Communicate with hospitals and other offices as directed by providers
  14. Room patients
  15. Assist with procedures

Specialized Responsibilities:

Performance Requirements:

  1. Patient history taking
  2. Triage of patient concerns and ability to schedule appropriately
  3. Ability to perform lensometry and neutralize patients` glasses
  4. Ability to perform diagnostic tests such as Visual Field, OCT, Topography, etc.
  5. Ability to perform keratometry
  6. Ability to perform basic tonometry
  7. Ability to evaluate ocular motility
  8. Ability to perform retinoscopy and obtain a manifest refraction
  9. Ability to perform fundus photography
  10. Ability to perform A-scan measurements
  11. Ability to perform IOL calculations
  12. Ability to prepare the lasers for physicians
  13. Assist physicians with interoffice surgical procedures and lasers
  14. Knowledge of ocular anatomy
  15. Knowledge of systemic diseases and their impact on eyes
  16. Knowledge of medical terminology
  17. Knowledge of surgical procedures
  18. Knowledge of clinical optics
  19. Knowledge of ocular pharmacology
  20. Knowledge of laser and surgical procedures
  21. Knowledge of clinic and department policies and procedures related to infection prevention, disaster plans and safety processes
  22. Knowledge of organizational policies, relations and procedures to administer patient care
  23. Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care

Education/Experience/Certifications:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent
  2. Graduation from an accredited program for ophthalmic assistant or technician preferred but not required
  3. 3-5 years` experience as an Ophthalmic Technician in a clinical setting

Non-Essential Duties: Other duties as assigned within scope of practice

Typical Working Conditions:

The typical working conditions are in a clinical office and laboratory environment dealing with multiple patients in a fast paced work environment. Occasional stress from workload and customer complaints. Possible exposure to communicable diseases common in a clinical healthcare setting.

Typical Physical Demands:

  1. Requires a full body range of motion to handle, lift, push, and pull patients
  2. Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time
  3. Occasionally lifts and carries items up to 50 lbs.
  4. Push and pull patients in wheelchairs occasionally with up to 75 lbs. of force
  5. Requires visual acuity correctable to 20/30, hearing within normal range and color perception
