Job Description and Essential Functions

Job Title/Position: Buyer

Job Classification: Administrative/Professional Support

Brief Description of Job Responsibilities:

Performs purchasing functions and implements cost saving initiatives. The buyer

coordinates activities for purchasing materials, products or services which support the

daily operations of Prevea Health.

Specialized Responsibilities:

(This list may not include all of the duties assigned)

1. Processes requisitions and Purchase Orders. Edits and reviews requirements.

Contacts requisitioning department to complete details and suggests alternatives.

2. Works with supplier sales representatives for product identification and information.

3. Places telephone, EDI, fax or Internet orders for supplies with vendors utilizing

computerized materials management system.

4. Coordinates with supplier and requisitioner to resolve any changes in order.

5. Processes correspondence and telephone calls to obtain quotes, delivery dates and

other data.

6. Recommends economical methods of shipment consistent with delivery requirements.

7. Follows up and expedites as necessary to maintain delivery dates. Contacts

department staff regarding backordered items and/or expedite problems.

8. Coordinates product returns.

9. Distributes product information to department heads, maintains updated reference,

quote and catalog files, and researches new products/services and vendors.

10. Maintains stock levels. Maintains records, reports and files for department.

Inventories storeroom and submits orders for supplies and materials.

11.Assists with the selection and training of departmental personnel.

12.Attends in-service and other meetings to keep current on organizational activities and

materials management trends.

13. Possible occasional (non-overnight) travel.

14.Performs related work as required.

Performance Requirements:

1. Knowledge of materials management purchasing policies and procedures.

2. Knowledge of applicable computer applications.

3. Knowledge of purchasing functions including ordering, receiving, distribution, storing

and organizing of supplies.

4. Knowledge of purchasing practices including invoicing and accounting procedures..

5. Knowledgeable of group purchasing contracts.

6. Skill in examining documents for correctness and interpreting their accuracy.

7. Skill in gathering, analyzing, and evaluating data.

8. Skill in critical thinking, verbal and written communication.

9. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with staff and


10. Ability to organize, coordinate and monitor project work.

11. Ability to prepare comprehensive reports.

12. Ability to multi-task in fast-paced environment.


Associate`s degree or higher in purchasing/supply chain or business, or healthcare related field with work experience in purchasing or business.

Non-Essential Duties:

Typical Working Conditions:

Combination of office and storeroom environment.

Typical Physical Demands:

Requires sitting for long periods of time working in an office environment. Some bending

and stretching required. Ability to work under stress required. Telephone usage required.

Lifting of up 50 lbs. required. Manual dexterity required for use of calculator and

computer keyboard. Vision must be correctable to 20/30 and hearing must be within normal range.
