The Building Envelope and Urban Systems Research (BE&USR) Group in the Energy and Transportation Sciences Division is seeking a R&D Assistant Staff Member. BE&USR conducts research on energy optimized solutions for whole building systems and communities using the DOE-designated National User Facility at ORNL, the Building Technologies Research and Integration Center (BTRIC). Interdisciplinary teams within BE&USR are advancing new envelope technologies, building energy models, sensors and controls, buildings to grid communications, and systems integration for neighborhoods of the future.
Main Responsibilities / Duties
You will be responsible for conducting, coordinating, and reporting complex research assignments related to buildings, specifically: (1) building hygrothermal (heat and moisture) modeling; and (2) building components and systems analysis for energy efficiency. Your work will involve interacting and collaborating with researchers from universities, national laboratories, and private industry. You will have the opportunityto interface directly with program sponsors and lead proposal development teams.
This position requires a PhD or MS degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
- Expertise in advanced hygrothermal modelling, laboratory measurements of hygrothermal properties and performances on component and system level and buildings forensics experience
- Excellent communication skills (oral and written), as well as strong interpersonal skills to support team building, partnering, and leadership
- The ability to develop and/or maintain strong relationships through active participation in building industry organizations and events

The BE&USR Group provides support for improving the efficiency of U.S. residential and commercial buildings. We focus on whole-building modeling, urban-scale energy modeling, measurement and verification in research houses and commercial buildings, technology development, and integration and optimization of technologies on new and retrofit buildings. Our work is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, under the Building Technologies Office and Office of Electricity within the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.
