Purpose:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security. Our diverse capabilities span a broad range of scientific and engineering disciplines, enabling the laboratory to explore fundamental science challenges and conduct the research needed to accelerate the delivery of solutions to the marketplace.

We are looking for highly motivated applicants with expertise in computer science or nuclear engineering to lead the packaging, testing, and maintenance of software for the Radiation Safety Information Computational Center (RSICC). RSICC supports the acquisition, testing, and release of research software for nuclear science and engineering. We have an opening for an early- or mid-career technical professional in the Reactor Physics (RP) Group within the Reactor and Nuclear Systems Division (RNSD), Nuclear Science and Engineering Directorate. The RP Group develops and applies state-of-the-art modeling and simulation capabilities to lattice physics, reactor core, spent fuel, and fuel cycle applications through leadership in the development of SCALE and Virtual Environment for Reactor Applications (VERA), which are distributed through RSICC. The successful applicant will support software packaging, testing, and maintenance for RSICC and will assist in maintenance of RSICCs website, databases, and secure cloud server.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • For software contributed to RSICC, test the software on various systems, collaborate with software developers at the contributing institutions to resolve issues, and document test results
  • Develop and utilize scripts to efficiently package contributed software for licensing and distribution to customers worldwide
  • Accurately identify and resolve customer issues, preserve the interactions, and document the issues and their resolutions
  • Work with ORNLs Office of Export Control to properly determine the export control level of the contributed software
  • Advise and assist other RSICC staff members on technical issues as required
  • Manage software installation and user access on RSICCs secure cloud server
  • This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.

Basic Qualification

  • BS in nuclear engineering, computer science, or a related field, and at least 24 months of cumulative work experience in the nuclear field through post-graduate work, co-ops, internships, or with the US Navy
  • Experience working with C++, FORTRAN, and scripting languages
  • Experience with basic system administrative duties
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including verbal and writing skills
  • This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license

Preferred Qualifications

  • MS in nuclear engineering, computer science, or related field
  • Familiarity with HTML and databases
  • Experience developing collaborative software with a computational nuclear analysis code suite such as SCALE, CASL, or NEAMS
