The National Transportation Research Center (NTRC) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking an experienced research and development scientist/engineer to investigate novel catalysts for the control of emissions from advanced combustion engines for the transportation market.Our mission offers industry, academia, and other agencies the opportunity to access state-of-the-art technologies, equipment and instrumentation, and computational resources to advance transportation technologies. These resources are essential to our efforts in the areas of improving fuel economy, reducing emissions and addressing transportation systems issues, such as traffic congestion, evacuation planning and highway safety.In addition to serving users, ORNL conducts approximately one-half of all its transportation research at NTRC. The nearly 200 ORNL employees based at NTRC work closely with government agencies, industry and universities through non-user facility partnerships including public-domain work for federal agencies, DOE-funded partnerships with industry, and proprietary contracts conducted on behalf of automotive companies and suppliers, large and small.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
You will be responsible for conducting, coordinating, and reporting complex research assignments related to (1) synthesis and characterization of novel catalysts and (2) catalyst performance in process conditions representative of automotive exhaust systems. The work will involve interacting and collaborating with researchers from universities, national laboratories, and private industry.Technical questions should be directed to Dr. Todd Toops at 865-946-1207.

Qualifications Required:
  • Ph.D. in a relevant scientific discipline with a Chemistry or Chemical Engineering degree preferred.
  • Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. degree more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment.
  • The education, and experience to (1) synthesize novel catalyst formulations, characterize catalyst nanostructures, and (2) execute original and novel approaches to elucidate reaction and deactivation mechanisms associated with emission control devices.
  • Extensive experimental skill and experience is required, as you will have the opportunity to design and set up experimental systems as well as analyze and report on experimental data.
  • Experience synthesizing highly dispersed metals on high surface area supports and/or synthesis of zeolites is preferred.
  • Knowledge of advanced tools and instruments that can make in-situ measurements of species, temperature, surface adsorbates, and reaction intermediates.
  • Knowledge of laboratory R&D methods for emission control, as well as the associated instrumentation.
  • Extensive experience operating bench-scale and micro-scale reactors to evaluate chemical processes is necessary to succeed in this position.
  • It is also desirable that the applicant have experience using materials and surface analysis techniques (XRD, TEM, BET, DRIFTS, etc.) and gas analysis techniques (MS, FTIR, etc.).
  • You will perform experimental work, but linkage of experimental results to models and simulations is also an objective of the position. So, experience in modeling is also valued.You will be expected to publish papers in peer-reviewed journals. You should resolve any unusual technical problems that may occur during the course of research experiments and develop requisite experimental changes. You must demonstrate excellent communication skills, written and oral, in order to report results to industry and government sponsors and at technical conferences. You will work with individuals and in a team environment. You will be self-motivated and be able to perform duties in a time efficient manner.This position is a temporary, full-time assignment for up to 24 months, contingent on successful performance and continued funding.
