The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences. HFIR also provides unique facilities for isotope production and neutron irradiation. To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL go to: Under the general supervision of the Design Office Team Leader and technical direction from design engineers within the Neutron Technologies Division (NTD) produces high quality engineering design packages. Collect and maintains records, technical drawings and documents for the SNS mechanical systems. Design Services Group is responsible for development of designs for beam line instruments and components and systems.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Takes complex engineering designs from conception through manufacture and build. -Successfully liaises with engineers and physicists throughout the design process.
  • Creates engineering drawings using computer-aided design (Creo and 3-D CAD) graphics workstation.
  • Converts multi-CAD system subassemblies (Creo, AutoCAD, Mechanical Desktop, etc.) from the partner laboratories into integrated mechanical assemblies.
  • Produces multi-system installation drawings and specifications.
  • Prepares clear, complete and accurate working plans and detail drawings from layouts, rough or detailed sketches, electronic databases, or written or verbal instructions.
  • Checks detail drawings to assure compliance with engineering codes and drafting standards.
  • Works with the Document Control Center to help ensure accuracy and completeness of drawings.
  • Maintains a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.

    Qualifications Required:
    Basic Qualifications:Associates degree in an engineering discipline with 10 years experience in design of complex mechanical systems or an equivalent combination of education and design experience required. 5 years experience using Creo CAD systems required. Knowledge of the technical concepts of drafting and engineering principles, codes, and standards required. Experience working in an accelerator or nuclear environment is desirable.Preferred Qualifications:
  • Other CAD package experience is a plus.
  • Experience with machine shop interaction a plus
  • Enthusiasm for working in a motivated team environment is highly desirable.

    Work Directions and Interfaces:
    Reports to the Design Office Supervisor. Interfaces with engineers and scientists across the project.Responsible for reviewing and checking the work of detail designers.

    Measures of Effectiveness:
  • Successfully produces conceptual drawings and layouts associated with the assembly and maintenance of SNS mechanical systems.
  • Successfully oversees the production of detail design packages and performs detail checking.
  • Successfully records all design drawings in the appropriate engineering database.
