The National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR), located at Wichita State University in Wichita, KS, is a premier aviation research organization that has gained national and international recognition for its programs and laboratories. NIAR is engaged in basic and applied research, testing and certification. The city of Wichita, KS is a home of major aerospace industry, namely Spirit Aerosystems, Boeing, Hawker Beechcraft, Cessna, Bombardier-Learjet and many aviation suppliers. NIAR is seeking a candidate for the position Research Engineer. To be considered for the position, applicants must provide a resume and three professional related references. The Research Engineer will conduct research in the areas of advanced composites materials, damage tolerance of bonded joints and composites, aviation safety, manufacturing defects and structural integrity of aircraft structures and correspond with FAA officials and industry personnel concerning conformity inspections and certification issues involving composite materials and bonded joints The Research Engineer will supervise and train research staff to conduct experiments, coordinate with FAA officials and industry representatives, develop test matrix and procedures, documentation of project work and analysis details, and generate final reports.
Required Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
1) A Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace or Aeronautical Engineering,
2) Have hands-on experience and process development experience in composite material fabrication techniques including resin transfer molding (RTM), bag molding, wet lay-up, and autoclave,
3) Demonstrated ability with generating material properties of composites, metals, and adhesive and mechanically fastened joints,
4) Have experience with fatigue characterization of metallic and composite elements,
5) Demonstrated ability in data acquisition and analysis of advanced 3D strain measurements using ARAMIS Photogrammetry on composite and metal,
6) Demonstrated ability in operating Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) for inspection of composite and metal,
7) Have hands-on experience in testing, troubleshooting, and maintaining Material Test System (MTS) servo-hydraulic test machines,
8) Have working knowledge of CATIA V5,
9) Must be a US citizen or permanent resident
