POSITION SUMMARY

Oversees field operations for smaller-scale projects. Leads and manages logistics of the project, including set-up and planning, schedule and budget management, materials and supplies, and quality control. Leads and manages the field associates, including staffing, coordinating and attending meetings, and ensuring safety. Ensures work is performed within budget and ahead of schedule and according to specifications.

NOTE: This job description is written from the perspective of the Superintendent 1 leading a smaller-scale project. However, the Superintendent 1 may also be asked to assist other Superintendents on projects, depending on business needs.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Follows standard McCownGordon procedures and policies to accomplish the following:

Project Set-Up and Planning
  • Develops and implements pre-job plans by analyzing the construction documents, identifying the critical path, long-lead items, and setting a plan to build the project in the most efficient manner.
  • Develops the site logistic plan by carefully analyzing site conditions, utilities, material deliveries, crane access, employee parking, trailer and/or office set-up. Develops plan to address safety concerns, including signage and emergency evacuation routes.
  • Develops a plan to handle storm water run-off/sedimentation at the project site.
  • Analyzes line-of-site issues at entrances to public roads and develops a plan to handle.
  • Determines all existing public utilities above and below ground on and around site to prevent future damage issues with construction activity.

Schedule Management
  • Coordinates and schedules trade partners, vendors and site staff on a daily/weekly basis by tracking timelines, following up, and making adjustments as necessary to keep on schedule.
  • Develops two and three week look-ahead schedule by identifying the most critical items that must occur over the next few weeks. Coordinates with key trade partners and suppliers to ensure the project is properly staffed and materials in place to meet the critical paths.
  • Coordinates with Project Manager/Project Engineer weekly for schedule updating.

Budget Management
  • Studies project budget and weekly reports to ensure the project meets or exceeds budget specifications.
  • Establishes production rates for team to ensure work is performed within budget requirements.
  • Reviews weekly unit cost reports and adjusts team/production to meet budget.
  • Sets corrective measures to steer the project back on budget if necessary by communicating and coordinating with suppliers and trade partners.
  • Reviews weekly labor reports and reports to Project Management any errors or discrepancies.
  • Reviews necessary budget items with on-site field staff to ensure work is performed within budget.

Materials, Supplies and Equipment
  • Monitors material and deliveries to ensure accurate quantities are on site when needed to meet project specifications.
  • Maintains company equipment and tools by following manufacturers specifications and maintenance requirements and conducting periodic safety inspections.
  • Evaluates and reviews with Director, Field Operations equipment needs and merits of purchases versus rentals.

Quality Control
  • Develops and maintains a quality control plan for each project to ensure the project exceeds client expectations.
  • Oversees and monitors overall quality control on the project for both company and trade partners work.
  • Conducts pre-installation meetings to set the quality control expectations.
  • Manages the punch list with the goal of zero items on the list by continually monitoring and setting the expectations throughout the project.
  • Ensures all applicable inspections, including structural, civil, and codes are performed and discrepancies are resolved immediately.
  • Photographs job progress, materials, operations, and site conditions by using a digital camera and forwarding to project management at least weekly.

Documentation
  • Maintains all documentation for the project, including accurate timesheets, daily reports, field activities, field work orders, directives, weather reports, inspection reports, visitor logs, weekly safety reports, and any other reports specific to the project.
  • Maintains organized filing system for all paperwork.
  • Keeps drawings, logs, diaries, and inspection notebooks up to date.
  • Manages documentation of business-related expenses by keeping receipts, regularly completing expense report forms, and submitting to Accounting.

Staffing
  • Evaluates and addresses project hiring needs by communicating with the Field Hiring Coordinator to add and remove staff and adjust accordingly.
  • Watches performance of workers and provides feedback to Field Hiring Coordinator on whether to hire or not hire workers to maximize and strengthen the McCownGordon team.
  • Coordinates all company work forces on the project by evaluating labor needs with the Foreman and delegating work accordingly.
  • Supervises associates at the site by monitoring attendance, performance, safety compliance, quality control, conduct, and adherence to core values. Addresses disciplinary issues and relays to Field Hiring Coordinator.
  • Offers encouragement and recognition for work completed on time and with high quality.

Meetings and Relationships
  • Coordinates weekly trade partner foreman meetings.
  • Conducts pre-installation meetings with all suppliers and trade partners affected by the installation process. Coordinates how all materials will be tied into each other and how the process will flow for the most efficient and highest-quality application.
  • Ensures trailer or office area is in acceptable condition for meetings with architects, owners, and/or engineers.
  • Maintains good relationships with all owners, architects, engineers, and inspectors by communicating regularly, facilitating visits, and acting in a professional and courteous manner to represent McCownGordon.

Safety
  • Assists the Risk Management Director with development and implementation of project safety plan.
  • Prepares the weekly site safety walk-throughs by inspecting the site and looking for areas that need special attention to keep the site safe.
  • Completes a site safety inspection report weekly and submits to Risk Management Director and Project Manager before Progress meeting.
  • Addresses safety concerns with McCownGordon staff and trade partners. Outlines corrective measures and action plans to resolve. Halts work immediately on concerns that are life-safety issues.
  • Conducts or supervises weekly jobsite Tool Box Meetings.
  • Ensures site is clean and organized.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each primary responsibility satisfactorily.   • 5+ years of experience in the construction industry, or equivalent level of knowledge and skills.
  • Basic knowledge of personal computer and e-mail applications.
  • Proven ability to accurately schedule construction activities or projects.
  • Demonstrated success in effectively managing safety on projects.
  • Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret contract documents, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of clients, subcontractors, or associates.
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Valid drivers license and good driving record.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience in Layout (Total Station)
  • Bachelors degree in a construction-related field.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the associate regularly works in outside weather conditions. The associate frequently works near moving mechanical parts.   • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
