Summary:
Upward Bound is a pre-college program of the US Department of Education for low income and first generation college–bound high school students. First generation means neither parent has completed a bachelor’s degree. Moraine Park Technical College is the home base for the grant project. Each summer we will provide a 6-week summer school of core academics and enrichment classes to strengthen academic skills in a college preparatory program. Students will be exposed to the wide variety of college options throughout their time in the program. A total of 60 students from Ripon, Fond Du Lac and Beaver Dam High Schools who are all 9th, 10th, and 11th graders currently make up the cohort.

We seek DPI licensed high school teachers to teach grades 9-12 in the subject areas of math, science, composition/reading, and foreign language. The program enhances skills and extends the knowledge base to better prepare the students for high school success in college prep classes.

Summer Session runs from June 15 –July 23, 2009 and classes will be held at the Moraine Park Fond Du Lac campus. Instruction is
Monday-Thursday. Friday will be used for field trips and activities. Teachers do not report on Fridays. Teachers typically teach 2-3 classes. Main academic instruction is from 8:50 AM-1 PM. Students arrive at 8:30 and leave at 3:30 PM. A one week residential dorm experience at Marian University will be the last week, July 20-23, and classes will be taught by our instructors at Marian.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS OF SUMMER SESSION INSTRUCTORS:
• Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree preferred in area of competency (math, English, reading, science, foreign language). DPI license
• Teaching experience in area of competency
• Ability to assess academic needs and evaluate students in an academic setting
• Ability to document contacts and track academic progress
• Experience in a similar college-bound program preferred
Summer Session instructors must display sensitivity to the educational and psychological issues affecting low income, first-generation youth who have the potential to be college-bound.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Developing course design, content, and selecting materials in cooperation with director.
• Providing challenging instruction and being aware of individual student needs.
• Attending weekly faculty/staff meetings
• Providing written evaluations of each student at the end of Summer Session
