Job Summary:
The Benefit Specialist administers the day-to-day activities related to the administration of employee benefit programs, including salary continuance, qualified and non-qualified retirement programs, medical, dental and prescription programs, group term life insurance, 403(b) tax sheltered annuities, pre-tax dollar account programs, COBRA, HIPPA, IRS (Section 125) Flexible Spending Accounts, vision, tuition reimbursement, vacation, sick and holiday benefits. This position is responsible for the maintenance of the on-line eligibility system for the benefit plans.
Essential Generic Job Functions (List in order of importance):
1. Reviews and interprets the Medical Center’s benefit plans and programs’ policy and procedures.
2. Communicates changes in the benefit programs to employees and third party administrators.
3. Serves as a liaison between the Medical Center, state disability, LTD and life insurance carriers.
4. Counsels employees on the Medical Center’s benefit programs, ensuring eligibility requirements are met; assist in the completion of appropriate forms, calculate sick pay supplement and process temporary disability claims.
5. Advises employees regarding benefit continuation during leave of absence, calculate and prepare employee billing statements, collect and process premiums.
6. Conducts periodic audits of the Medical Center’s Benefit Plans and Programs and responds to audits from regulatory agencies.
7. Conducts and counsels new employees on the benefit options during the General Orientation Program and other in-services as necessary.
8. Assists in claim resolution.
9. Assists in the design, implementation and conversion of the HRIS system.
10. Provides technical assistance in order to resolve system problems and assist with on-going training and documentation.
11. Provides guidance to end users in the department in the retrieval of information from databases and assists in automating work flows utilizing excel and access spreadsheets
