Suicide Reduction Policy Senior Associate

Official Title: Senior Associate, Suicide Risk Reduction

Project Overview
The suicide risk reduction project is a new initiative that seeks to make suicide risk screening and evidence-based care part of routine health care in the U.S. In particular, the project will:
  • Expand suicide risk screening and care among a select group of providers and document their experience;
  • Publish and disseminate information to help providers expand screening and care;
  • Increase availability of screening tools in electronic health records; and
  • Build the foundation for new health care standards for suicide screening and evidence-based care.


Position Overview
Under the direction of the senior manager, suicide risk reduction, the senior associate will contribute to research and publications; help plan and execute stakeholder convenings; collaborate with Pew colleagues in communications, government relations, and other units; and assist with programmatic priorities as needed.

The senior associate position is based in Pew's Washington, D.C., office, and it has a set time frame that could be extended based on the success of the program, funding sources, and board decisions on continued support.

Responsibilities
  • Develop knowledge of subject matter by monitoring publications, participating in conferences and other professional development activities, tracking the development and implementation of relevant public policy and trends in the health care sector, and identifying the positions of influential stakeholders on key policy issues.
  • Contribute to research and publication efforts by conducting literature reviews, qualitative research, landscape scans, and data analysis; drafting publications; reviewing contractors' work products; and conducting quality control and fact-checking.
  • Contribute to planning and execution of stakeholder convenings, including developing meeting materials, planning and helping to coordinate meeting logistics, and providing other support, as needed.
  • Collaborate with program, government relations, legal affairs, communications, research support, event services, and other colleagues to advance the goals of the project and help ensure adherence to internal policies and procedures.
  • Contribute to and participate in Pew-wide projects as requested.


  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required.
  • Minimum of four years' experience in health care, health policy, and/or public policy.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including demonstrated abilities to adapt to different writing styles and to convey complex topics to an educated lay audience.
  • Demonstrated research and analytical skills, including an ability to synthesize complex information and identify themes and policy implications.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including a demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of a team.
  • Ability to think strategically and creatively, adjust to changing circumstances, remain attentive to details, and exercise sound judgment in problem-solving. Capacity to use these skills proactively to move complex projects forward while working collegially toward common goals.
  • Demonstrated time and project management skills, including an ability to meet multiple deadlines by maintaining a high-level of organization. Ability to establish a systematic course of action to ensure project completion.

Travel
Position will have occasional travel to meetings and conferences.
