Staff Scientist I - Neural Plasticity
Lieber Institute Inc

Job Location: Baltimore, MD
Description:

A little about us:

The Lieber Institute for Brain Development (LIBD) was established in 2010 to plot a new course in biomedical research that would change the lives of individuals affected with developmental brain disorders. We are one of the only research institutions in the world focused specifically on understanding how genes and the environment influence the way our brains develop that lead to conditions such as schizophrenia, autism, bipolar disorder and related developmental brain disorders. Through our cutting-edge research, answers are emerging and being translated into a robust pipeline of new drugs in development. And, by focusing on genes and their dynamic interplay with the environment, we are getting even closer to the holy grail in medical research, the discovery of strategies for primary prevention.

We are a group of dedicated, multidisciplinary and optimistic researchers, working at the cutting edge of science, utilizing state-of-the-art tools to unlock the mystery of the brain and transform the way we approach the development of new treatments, and ultimately cures. LIBD is an independent 501(c)(3) medical research institute located in the Bioscience Park on the campus of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Hospital in Baltimore, MD.

Job Summary:

We are seeking a self-motivated individual to join our research group as a Staff Scientist. This position will help lead key components of several large-scale spatial and single-cell transcriptomics projects in postmortem human brain tissue across multiple neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders. Candidates must hold at least a master's degree in neuroscience, biology or a related field with extensive full-time experience (PhD with relevant postdoctoral experience is preferred). Previous bench experience in molecular/cellular biology, confocal microscopy, and/or next generation sequencing is required. Expertise and knowledge in human neuroanatomy as well as experience handling postmortem human brain tissue is strongly preferred. The applicant will be expected to organize experimental workflows for the team on these large scale, high-throughput projects. They will be required to design, coordinate, and conduct bench experiments, as well as participate in data analysis working in collaboration with data scientists. Ability to perform work efficiently and carefully are essential. The position will be required to train, supervise and organize the work of research assistants and technicians. Given the multi-disciplinary and team science nature of the projects, the position requires highly effective communication with teams leading the neuropathological and computational aspects of the project.

Key responsibilities:

Assisting with human brain tissue dissections

Preparation and cryosection of human brain tissue

RNA-seq library construction

Nuclei isolation and FACs sorting

Immunohistochemistry and histological staining

Confocal imaging and slide-scanning

Other duties as assigned
