Community Organizing Manager

Job Location: Sacramento, CA

The Community Organizing Manager is member of Mutual Housing California's Community Development Department (CDD) leadership team. This position leads Mutual Housing's efforts to redefine the definition of community to reach beyond the walls of our apartment boundaries. Through community organizing efforts, we develop leaders who build collective power through relationships, identify and research community concerns, and take public action to impact systems that affect their daily lives and the future of their families. In collaboration with other members of the CDD team and resident leaders, the Community Organizing Manager is responsible for creating and maintaining an environment that allows for these efforts to thrive.

The Role:

1) You will work with resident leaders to support the interests of their community. As the Community Organizing Manager, you will be responsible for creating and maintaining an environment where community leaders can identify community concerns and build power to make necessary systemic changes. Mutual Housing communities should provide an opportunity for personal, professional, and communal advancement. Building trust with residents will be critical and as the Community Organizing Manager, you will be responsible for creating and maintaining an environment where residents can expand their opportunities and those of the greater community.

2) You will build and maintain relationships with partners and stakeholders and support cross-departmental work to expand and strengthen the work of Mutual Housing. You will also be responsible for building relationships with Mutual Housing community partners (schools, nonprofits, other civic leaders, etc.) so that you can nimbly operate within the housing community's ecosystem.

3) You will work collaboratively as a member of the Community Development Leadership Team. The Community Development Team is made up of three sub departments; Community Building, Resident Programs, and Community Organizing that work together to strengthen our communities through resident participation and leadership development.

4) You will supervise and mentor Community Builders and Community Organizers. You will support efforts to fulfill all job requirements of their designated roles.

Educational minimum: Bachelors Degree in a related field. Related professional experience maybe considered in lieu of education.

Minimum experience: we are seeking candidates with a minimum of five years proven success in a similar position.

Preferred qualifications

• Demonstrated ability to research institutional goals and interests and determine how these align with our goals.

• You have (formal or informal) experience guiding, leading, and teaching others, building consensus within groups, and moving groups toward action.

• Experience in non-profit program, community development, and community organizing.

• Commitment to the provision of long-term affordable housing and to the concept of organizing low-income people to stabilize communities and create social change.

• Experience and comfort working in a multi-cultural environment

• Demonstrated commitment to, and deep understanding of, the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion

• Commitment to green policies, procedures, and practices

• Strong facilitation and engagement skills

• Commitment to the principles, policies, and protocols of Community Building and Engagement.

• You have project and event management experience and are comfortable developing ideas and seeing them through to fruition.

• You have experience and/or are confident in your ability to capture and report data and supervise staff, volunteers and/or interns.

• Willingness and ability to work evenings and occasional weekends.

• Strong English verbal communication skills and evidence of clear writing ability.

• Ability to use Microsoft Office Word, Excel and Outlook.

• Must be able to travel to community or resident locations within a 60 mile radius of the work site.
