Brief Description of the Job
Under the direction of the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor, oversees electrical repairs and maintenance for assigned City facilities. Installs and monitors performance of installed electrical equipment for hazards, adjustments, or replacement. Repairs, installs, replaces, and tests electrical circuits, equipment, and appliances using appropriate tools and testing instruments. Repairs and maintains motor control centers and programmable logic controls (1000 volt and below). Plans electrical secondary system additions or modifications. Performs maintenance repairs using bucket truck and scissor lift. Assists other specialized trades to include plumbing, HVAC, landscaping, and general maintenance.
- Job Duties
Perform Electrical Maintenance (55%): Utilize appropriate hand and power tools and diagnostic equipment to repair, install, replace, and test 1000 volt and below electrical circuits, equipment and appliances. Diagnose and repair electrical controls, industrial motor control centers, and programmable logic controllers for secondary systems 1000 volt and below. Effectively plan and estimate work in most efficient manner to minimize facility downtime. Lead and train other maintenance staff in basic electrical repair and operation of electrical systems. Stay abreast of industry developments in electrical repair and maintenance. Work with the City`s electrical inspectors and Building Official as needed to meet ICC standards.
Maintain Street Lighting Equipment (30%): Troubleshoot equipment and oversee maintenance of outdoor street lighting. Repair and/or replace broken/defective lighting parts and systems. Procure and install new lighting equipment as necessary.
Support Inclement Weather Operations (5%): Work outside of regular schedule, throughout inclement weather conditions (i.e. snow and ice) by operating sanders, loaders, snowplows, and other specific equipment necessary to clear and maintain roads and walkways. Mix sand and salt for ice removal and treat bridges and roads as necessary. Wash brine and salt off equipment after use.
Ensures Workplace Safety (5%): Proactively identify, remove and/or report potential safety hazards. Take steps to address, remove, or report hazardous conditions or items. Comply with City, State, and Federal safety procedures and protocols in the performance of job duties. Ensure proper use of equipment and materials.
Assist with Other Maintenance Disciplines (5%): Assist with other maintenance disciplines as needed to include plumbing, HVAC, landscaping, and general maintenance.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Formal Education: Associate`s Degree or at least four years of equivalent experience in electrical repair and maintenance.
Experience: Over four years of experience in troubleshooting electrical systems is required.
Driver`s License Required: Class D South Carolina license.
Certifications and Other Requirements: Must have Municipal Association of SC Master Electrician License. HVAC journeyman license is preferred. Computer experience preferred.

Knowledge: Work is difficult and diversified with limited precedent and requires the frequent application of a high degree of independent, logical, evaluative, and/or professional thinking to originate and develop procedures, techniques or ideas within the parameters of a broad conceptual outline. Work requires advanced skills and knowledge in approaches and systems. Independent judgment and decision-making abilities are necessary to apply technical skills effectively. Work product primarily affects processes and program/functional areas within the department.
Reading: Ability to read papers, blueprints, periodicals, journals, manuals, and policies.
Math: Ability to deal with a system of real numbers; and practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions and measurement.
Writing: Ability to prepare reports and estimates for repair work and equipment recommendations.
Machines, Tools, Equipment, and Work Aids: Ability to read commercial electrical blueprints and apply NEC through the full range of commercial and industrial maintenance and construction work. Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures. Ability to use electrical meters, hand tools, bucket truck and scissor lift. Ability to use laptop computer and smart phone with internet access.
Primary Work Location: Outdoors (rooftop, ground equipment areas), indoor electrical/mechanical rooms, attics, and closets.
Environmental/Health and Safety Factors: Frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Majority of work performed outside or with exposure to risk. Weekly exposure to wetness and/or humidity, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, and physical hazards. Frequent exposure to mechanical hazards, chemical hazards, electrical hazards, and fire hazards. Occasional exposure to explosives, communicable diseases, and physical danger or abuse.
Protective Equipment Required: Safety glasses, hard hat, steel-toed shoes, protective clothing including arc-flash equipment, and hearing protection.
Continuously requires vision and hearing. Frequently requires standing, walking, lifting, carrying, kneeling, reaching, pushing/pulling, climbing, bending, crouching, and talking. Occasionally requires fine dexterity, handling, sitting, crawling, foot controls, balancing, and twisting. Heavy strength demands include exerting 50-75 pounds occasionally, 25-50 pounds frequently, or from 10 up to 20 pounds constantly.
Frequently requires frequent change of tasks and working closely with others as part of a team. Occasionally requires time pressures, emergency situations, irregular schedule/overtime, performing multiple tasks simultaneously, tedious or exacting work, and noisy/distracting environment.
