Brief Description of the Job
Under the supervision of the Streets Cleaning Supervisor, removes litter from streets, sidewalks, and parking garages located in the City. Empties and cleans trash cans within the Central Business District (CBD). Clears and treats streets and sidewalks in the CBD during seasonal weather to include removing leaves and debris, ice and snow, and applying ice melt. Operates backpack blower, ice and snow equipment, pickup trucks, and utility vehicles (UTV`s). Performs other duties as assigned.
- Job Duties
Maintain Cleanliness of Streets, Sidewalks, and Pedestrian Right-of-Ways (85%): Empty and clean garbage cans and pick up litter from streets and sidewalks within the Central Business District. Using a backpack blower, remove debris from sidewalks, curbs/gutters, plazas, and pedestrian right-of-ways. Use pressure-washing equipment to clean surfaces thoroughly. When necessary, empty trash and clean up litter in areas outside of the CBD.
Maintain Cleanliness of Parking Garages (10%): Assist in cleaning parking garages within the City as needed to include picking up litter, emptying garbage cans, blowing debris, and pressure washing surface areas.
Clear and Treat Streets and Sidewalks During Seasonal Weather (5%): Treat and clear surface areas of hazards by utilizing ice and snow equipment, to include walk behind power broom, pickup trucks and UTV`s with plow and spreader attachments. Apply ice/snow melt as necessary.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Formal Education: High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Experience: Under and including one year of related experience is required.
Driver`s License Required: Class D South Carolina license.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge: Work requires basic creative problem solving in the use of equipment and material, or the application of techniques and procedures. Guidelines and standards are available but independent or original thinking is required to organize and execute assigned work, refine procedures, techniques or concepts, or resolve operational problems. While processes and methods may vary, outcomes are typically predetermined. Work product primarily affects unit processes.
Reading: Basic Level: Ability to read basic communication using common two or three syllable words.
Math: Basic Level: Ability to perform the four basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
Writing: Basic Level: Ability to write simple sentences containing subject, verb, and object, and/or series of numbers, names, and addresses.
Machines, Tools, Equipment, and Work Aids: Backpack blowers, dustpans, brooms, cleaning supplies, shovels, pick sticks, utility vehicles and pickup trucks.
Primary Work Location: Outdoors (streets, sidewalks, plaza and parking garages).
Environmental/Health and Safety Factors: Frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Majority of work performed outside or with exposure to risk. Daily exposure to extreme temperature, wetness and/or humidity, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, and physical hazards. Constant exposure to communicable disease, and physical danger. Frequent exposure to traffic. Occasional exposure to chemical hazards and electrical hazards.
Protective Equipment Required: Safety glasses, gloves, ear plugs, ear phones, safety vest, steel-toed boots, and dust mask.
Continuously requires standing, walking, lifting, carrying, reaching, vision, hearing, twisting, and talking. Frequently requires crawling, pushing/pulling, climbing, foot controls, bending, and crouching. Occasionally requires sitting, kneeling, and balancing. Heavy strength demands include exerting 50-100 pounds occasionally, 25-50 pounds frequently, or from 10 up to 20 pounds constantly.
Frequently requires frequent change of tasks, performing multiple tasks simultaneously, working closely with others as part of a team, and noisy/distracting environment. Occasionally requires time pressures, emergency situations, irregular schedule/overtime, and tedious or exacting work.
