Brief Description of the Job
Under the direction of the Community Center Supervisor, assists with organizing, monitoring, leading, and conducting social, recreational, and cultural activities within the Parks and Recreation Department, including day camps, afterschool programs, youth and adult sports activities, special events, and various other activities. Promotes assigned recreation programs, scheduling, and enrolling students and collecting fees. Ensures program participants understand and comply with City, department, and program rules and procedures, while providing for participant safety and maintaining order and proper conduct. Acts as a liaison between parents, staff, and school personnel. Sets up and breaks down equipment and City facilities for activities and events; maintains facilities and equipment. Safely transports participants in City-provided passenger bus. Performs a variety of administrative duties such as typing, copying/duplicating, and filing materials; logging and recording information; creating and maintaining records and files; answering telephones; and scheduling activities. Works evening and weekend work hours.

Support Recreational Program Planning and Implementation (65%): Assist with developing, organizing, monitoring, leading, and conducting social, recreational, and cultural activities within the Parks and Recreation Department, including afterschool programs, day camps, youth and adult sports activities, special events, and other activities. Support the planning and implementation of special events such as Halloween, Easter, Christmas events, senior adult prom, fun runs, and mobile recreation programming. Help facilitate participant orientation program. Help organize and conduct special recreation events such as trips and outings. Assist in the planning and implementation of a daily After School Program that will meet the needs of attendees. Act as a liaison between parents, staff, and school personnel. Set up program, project, and activity areas as needed, collaborating with and assisting other staff in designing and implementing activities and assignments to encourage attendee`s enrichment. Interface with participants to build self-esteem and a comfort-level with peers. Support students in completing After School Program assignments; serve healthy snacks and meals. Plan, organize, implement, and supervise Day Camp activities, programs, and field trips as requested. Serve meals to Day Camp participants. Help recruit players for Athletic programs. As assigned, coach Youth Athletic programs, including but not limited to soccer, baseball, basketball, etc. Ensure program rules and procedures are followed. Preserve order and discipline among participants at a park, playground, sports field, or recreation center. Maintain professional, courteous behavior toward co-workers, members of the public and all others contacted in the course of work. Transport participants in city-provided 15 passenger buses.
Prepare and Maintain Recreation Facilities (15%): Prepare facility (i.e., fields, rooms, etc.) for planned events. Monitor facility use; open, close and secure building for events. Assist in the daily process of setting up spaces for classes and other activities and taking down of equipment such as tables, chairs, sound equipment, bleachers and other equipment needed for activities and events. Clean activity areas at the conclusion of each program. Remove all trash from the playground, campus grounds and recreational facility. Sweep and mop floors as needed.
Perform Administrative Duties (10%): Perform a variety of administrative duties in support of program activities. Participate in preparing and disseminating publicity such as calendars, flyers, posters, brochures for recreation activities. Serve as a source of information for the public in regard to related recreation programs. Respond to verbal and written questions regarding registration and general programs. Assist with student enrollment, collection of registration fees, and assignment of scholarships. Receipt any payments received and follow department procedures to secure monies in absence of supervisor. Assist in daily coordination of schedules. Help facilitate participant orientation program. Maintain, store and inventory recreation equipment, materials and supplies; issue athletic and other equipment to participants for activities. Purchase supplies as needed for programs and events and turn in all receipts to appropriate personnel. Prepare and maintain reports and records of program activities. Perform routine office tasks such as typing, filing, answering telephones, photocopying, faxing, and recordkeeping. Attend regular staff meetings. Participate and assist with in-service training.
Provide Safe Environment for Program Participants (10%): Maintain a safe and clean environment in the assigned area/program. Inspect recreation facilities, apparatus and equipment to ensure safety of participants and spectators. Proactively identify, remove and/or report potential hazards to supervisor. Perform first aid according to established procedures. Complete reports for injury, accidents and other incidents.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Formal Education: Associate`s Degree in Parks and Recreation Management, Sports Management, Physical Education, Athletic/Recreation Leadership, or other related degree required. Bachelor`s degree preferred.
Experience: Over one year of experience in Recreation required.
Driver`s License Required:
Recreation Leader (Non-CDL): Class D South Carolina license.
Certifications and Other Requirements: First Aid and CPR certification within three weeks of hire.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge: Work requires basic creative problem solving in the use of equipment and material, or the application of techniques and procedures. Guidelines and standards are available but independent or original thinking is required to organize and execute assigned work, refine procedures, techniques or concepts, or resolve operational problems. While processes and methods may vary, outcomes are typically predetermined. Work product primarily affects processeses and program/functional areas within the department.
Reading: Intermediate Level: Ability to read papers, periodicals, journals, manuals, and policies.
Math: Intermediate Level: Ability to deal with a system of real numbers; and practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions and measurement.
Writing: Intermediate Level: Ability to write reports, prepare business letters, summaries, meeting minutes, and emails using proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech.
Machines, Tools, Equipment, and Work Aids: Telephone, computers, copier, printer, recreational equipment.
Primary Work Location: Community centers.
Environmental/Health and Safety Factors: Occasional exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Occasional outside work. Daily exposure to extreme temperature, wetness and/or humidity, respiratory hazards, and noise and vibration. Communicable diseases.
Protective Equipment Required: Gloves.
Continuously requires talking. Frequently requires standing, walking, carrying, sitting, reaching, kneeling, pushing/pulling, climbing, and using vision. Occasionally requires fine dexterity, handling, balancing, bending, crouching, and twisting. Medium strength demands include exerting 20-50 pounds occasionally, 10-25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly.
Constantly requires working closely with children. Frequently requires working closely with others as part of a team and noisy/distracting environment. Occasionally requires time pressures, frequent change of tasks, performing multiple tasks simultaneously, and tedious or exacting work.
