Job Description

Brief Description of the Job
Safely and effectively operates all Solid Waste equipment in a relief capacity to collect and transport solid waste and recycling materials to a transfer station and/or landfill for disposal. Performs daily pre-and post-trip vehicle inspections and maintains accurate vehicle log. Courteously conveys basic information to the public when approached with questions. Trains new and existing equipment operators in use of all equipment. In absence of supervisor, provides guidance and direction to subordinate staff.

Job Duties

Essential Functions
Operate Solid Waste Heavy Equipment (80%): Operate all Solid Waste equipment (e.g. Automated Side-Loader (ASL), Automated Leaf Vacuum Truck (ALV), Rear Loader, Clam Truck, Flatbed Truck, Roll-Off Truck, etc.) in a relief capacity to collect and transport solid waste and recycling materials to a transfer station and/or landfill for disposal on a daily basis. According to daily needs of the division, may drive any route. Operate equipment with moving maneuverable parts in high traffic areas and around stationary objects. In performance of assigned tasks, proficiently utilize joysticks and levers to control multiple moving truck parts to include robotic/mechanical arms with claw/grabber, boom/suction hose, or boom/crane telescopic extension. Assist with after-hours special events waste collection including manual collections not associated with regular routes. During inclement weather, operate snow and ice removal equipment as needed. Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner providing information within the area of assignment including explaining collection procedures. Facilitates the resolution of complaints/concerns in a timely and efficient manner. Complete and submit records of the number of daily pick-ups, tonnage of loads, fuel usage, odometer readings, minor costs, and other records associated with solid waste refuse collections. Ensure equipment is properly fueled, lubricants are at appropriate levels, and tires are properly inflated. Wash equipment daily and clean cab area at least once a week.

Perform and Comply with Safety Measures (10%): Perform daily pre-and post-trip vehicle inspections and maintain accurate vehicle log. Inspect equipment prior to and after use in order to identify needed maintenance and report needs to supervisor or Fleet Division. Observe and listen to equipment during use to identify malfunctions or parts in need of replacement. When necessary shut down equipment to prevent further damage or hazards. Utilize proper body mechanics and ergonomics in performance of work. Use operating skills, learned safe practices and awareness of the surrounding area to avoid injury or damage to persons or property. Utilize spotters, flaggers or helpers as needed to maintain a safe working environment. When potentially unsafe conditions are observed make efforts to avoid or correct and notify responsible supervisor or safety representative in a timely manner.

Train & Supervise Staff in Operation of Equipment (10%): Train new or existing equipment operators in the use of all equipment. In absence of supervisor, as directed provide guidance and direction to subordinate staff; schedule and assign work; and check work in progress and upon completion. May provide input/recommendations on personnel matters.

Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.


Qualifications

Job Requirements
Formal Education: High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience: Over 3 years of experience operating and driving solid waste collection, right and left side drive, equipment (ASL, ALV, Clam Truck, Roll-off Truck, Rear Loader, etc.) is required.

Driver`s License Required: A valid South Carolina Class B CDL with air brake provisions is required.

Certifications and Other Requirements: DOT Medical Card is required.

Physical Demands
Overall Strength Demands: Medium strength demands include exerting 20-50 pounds occasionally, 10 pounds frequently, or negligible amounts constantly AND/OR walking or standing to a significant degree.

Physical Demands: Continuously requires fine dexterity, sitting, reaching, vision, foot controls, hearing, twisting, and talking. Frequently requires walking, handling, kneeling, pushing/pulling, climbing, and bending. Frequently requires standing, lifting, carrying, and crouching. Rarely requires balancing.

Machines, Tools, Equipment, and Work Aids: Hand tools, two-way radio, maps, and navigation routing aids.

Computer Equipment and Software: Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) software and hardware and route optimization aids (navigation hardware).

Working Conditions
Overall Working Conditions: Disagreeable: Frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards.

Environmental Factors: Daily exposure to extreme temperature, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration. Seasonal exposure to wetness and/or humidity.

Health and Safety: Frequent exposure to mechanical hazards and chemical hazards. Occasional exposure to electrical hazards.

Primary Work Location: Vehicle and outdoors.

Protective Equipment Required: Steel-toed shoes, gloves (optional), safety vest, hardhat, and safety glasses.

Non-Physical Demands
Frequently requires working closely with others as part of a team, tedious or exacting work, and noisy/distracting environment. Occasionally requires time pressures, frequent change of tasks, irregular schedule/overtime, and performing multiple tasks simultaneously. Rarely requires emergency situations.
