Job Description

Brief Description of the Job:
Under the direction of the Concrete Supervisor, maintains City streets, sidewalks, and buildings. Rehabilitates existing sidewalks and curb gutters, as well as installs new sidewalks, slabs, and walls. Cleans storm drain gates, washes sidewalks, lays pavers, installs culverts and storm drains, assists in engineering design, interprets blueprints, cuts steel, and constructs buildings from site work to completion. Must understand surveying fundamentals, as well as understand and comply with trenching and shoring policies and procedures.

Job Duties

Essential Functions:
Operate Equipment (20%): Utilize various equipment such as jack hammers, mixers, chainsaws, concrete saws, vibra screeds, pressure washers, blowers, hammer drills, and basic hand tools in performance of job duties to include tearing out old concrete and preparing sub-base. Conduct daily inspections of all equipment and clean after use to maintain in proper working order.

Form Concrete (20%): Appropriately apply the use of wood and steel forms in many different applications of concrete projects including but not limited to curb and gutters, sidewalks, driveways, accessibility ramps, walls, basins and traffic islands. Form concrete in compliance with all design specifications ensuring compliance with all regulations such as City ordinances and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Pour and Finish Concrete (20%): Follow the American Concrete Institute (ACI) guidelines and procedures in pouring and finishing concrete to ensure high quality work. Utilize the appropriate floats and tools required for each step in the pouring and finishing process.

Provide Traffic Control (10%): Evaluate jobsite and traffic pattern making note of possible safety issues that may arise. Follow South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) guidelines to initiate a traffic control plan. Put up signs, cones, barricades, and arrow-boards as necessary to route traffic safely around or away from jobsite.

Support Inclement Weather Operations (10%): Work outside of regular schedule, throughout inclement weather conditions (i.e. snow and ice) by operating sanders, loaders, snowplows, and other specific equipment necessary to clear and maintain roads and walkways. Mix sand and salt for ice removal and treat bridges and roads as necessary. Wash brine and salt off equipment after use.

Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Physical Demands
Overall Strength Demands: Heavy strength demands include exerting 50-100 pounds occasionally, 25-50 pounds frequently, or from 10 up to 20 pounds constantly.

Physical Demands: Continuously requires standing, walking, vision, bending, crouching, hearing, and talking. Frequently requires lifting, carrying, reaching, kneeling, pushing/pulling, and twisting. Occasionally requires fine dexterity, crawling, climbing, foot controls, and balancing. Rarely requires sitting.

Machines, Tools, Equipment, and Work Aids: : Rubber tire loader, georgia buggy, rammex, jack hammer, snow plow/sander, excavators, dump truck, water wagon, mixers, chainsaw, concrete saw, vibra screed, pressure washer, blowers, hammer drills, and basic hand tools.

Computer Equipment and Software: None.

Working Conditions
Overall Working Conditions: Disagreeable: Frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards.

Environmental Factors: Daily exposure to extreme temperature, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, and physical hazards. Weekly exposure to wetness and/or humidity.

Health and Safety: Frequent exposure to mechanical hazards and physical danger or abuse. Occasional exposure to chemical hazards, electrical hazards, and fire hazards. Rare exposure to explosives.

Primary Work Location: Outdoors (Jobsite).

Protective Equipment Required: Steel-toed boots, vest, goggles, dust mask, ear plugs, hammer shields, knee pads, gloves, harnesses, and hard hat.
Non-Physical Demands
Frequently requires time pressures, frequent change of tasks, irregular schedule/overtime, performing multiple tasks simultaneously, working closely with others as part of a team, and noisy/distracting environment. Occasionally requires emergency situations and tedious or exacting work.


Qualifications

Job Requirements
Formal Education: High school diploma or equivalent is required. Associate degree in Construction Engineering Technology or related field may be substituted for 1 year of experience.

Experience: Over 1 year of experience in a public works, utility, or construction field is required.

Driver`s License Required: Must have a valid South Carolina Class D license. Must have or obtain a South Carolina Class B Commercial Learner`s Permit (CLP) within 3 weeks of hire. Must have or obtain a South Carolina Class B CDL with tanker endorsement and air brake provision within 3 months of hire.
