Brief Description of the Job:
Under the direction of the Wastewater Repair Supervisor, perform a variety of technical and skilled duties in the restoration, rehabilitation, and rebuilding of the City`s wastewater system. Operate a variety of heavy and light equipment in the performance of job duties. Act as lead worker in absence of supervisor and assist in the training of new employees. Participate in after hours on-call duty requiring working after normal hours and holidays to resolve emergency situations. Work during inclement weather conditions (i.e. snow and ice) by operating specific pieces of equipment necessary to clear and maintain roads and walkways. Operator for the Public Works on-call system after hours.
- Job Duties
Complete Wastewater Repair Work Orders & Related Duties (80%): Operate heavy equipment such as backhoes, excavators, and skid steers to dig trenches for pipes and manholes as necessary. Operate dump trucks for hauling material and equipment to and from job sites. Install new sewer pipes and repair old pipes as required. Perform confined space entry and trenching and shoring operations. Raise sanitary sewer manholes to grade. Apply cement liner to interior of sewer manholes and finish liner with trowel and brush. Use tripod, winch, gas detectors, and harness in performance of duties. Operate jackhammer and remove asphalt debris. Remove old manhole ring and cover, install metal plates or replace with new ring and cover when necessary. Level new ring and cover to street pitch. Tamp new asphalt into hole. Enter manholes to clean install, set up and clean flow monitoring sensors. Clear right-of-ways for access to Wastewater mains for maintenance or repairs. Perform creek crossing inspections and cleaning of creek crossings as needed.
Provide Crew Leadership & Direction (5%): Act as lead worker in absence of supervisor. Assist in the training of new employees. Set up jobsites and fill out Foreman`s reports. Give out job assignments and ensure crew follows safety protocols.
Safety (5%): Proactively identifies, removes and/or reports potential safety hazards. Takes steps to address, remove, or report hazardous conditions or items. Complies with City, State, and Federal safety procedures and protocols in the performance of job duties. Ensures equipment and property safety.
Inclement Weather Operations (5%): Work during inclement weather conditions (i.e. snow and ice) by operating sanders, loaders, snowplows, and other specific equipment necessary to clear and maintain roads and walkways. Mix sand and salt for ice removal and treat bridges and roads as necessary. Wash brine and salt off equipment after use.
On-Call (5%): Participate in after hours on-call duty requiring working after normal hours and during holidays to resolve emergency situations.
Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Overall Strength Demands: Heavy strength demands include exerting 50-100 pounds occasionally, 25-50 pounds frequently, or from 10 up to 20 pounds constantly.
Physical Demands: Continuously requires fine dexterity, lifting, vision, hearing, and talking. Frequently requires standing, walking, carrying, reaching, kneeling, foot controls, and balancing. Occasionally requires handling, pushing/pulling, climbing, bending, crouching, and twisting. Rarely requires sitting.
Machines, Tools, Equipment, and Work Aids: Dump trucks, front end loader, tamp, concrete saw, jack hammer, chainsaw, gas detector, concrete mixer, pumps, and hand tools.
Computer Equipment and Software: Personal computer, laptop computer, CityWorks. Perform maintenance of flow monitoring sensors and download sensor information to computer.
Overall Working Conditions: Disagreeable: Frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards.
Environmental Factors: Daily exposure to extreme temperature, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, physical hazards, and wetness and/or humidity.
Health and Safety: Frequent exposure to mechanical hazards, and communicable diseases. Rare exposure to chemical hazards, electrical hazards, and fire hazards.
Primary Work Location: Outdoors.
Protective Equipment Required: Hard hat, steel-toed shoes, gloves, safety vest, safety glasses, ear protection, rain suit, and rubber boots.
Frequently requires performing multiple tasks simultaneously, working closely with others as part of a team, tedious or exacting work, and noisy/distracting environment. Occasionally requires time pressures, emergency situations, and frequent change of tasks. Rarely requires irregular schedule/overtime.
Formal Education: High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Experience: Over 2 years of experience in a public works, utility, or construction field is required.
Driver`s License Required: Must have a South Carolina Class B Commercial Driver`s License (CDL). Must have or obtain a South Carolina Class A Beginner`s Permit within 3 weeks of hire. Must have or obtain a South Carolina Class A CDL with tanker endorsement and air brake provision within 3 months of hire.
