Brief Description of the Job
Under the direction of the Superintendent of Trees, trims and removes trees on City property and rights-of-way, grinds stumps, installs and removes special event banners in the Central Business District (CBD), and maintains holiday lights within the trees along Main Street. Maintains and repairs athletic facility lights. Assists with special event operations as assigned. Provides after hours support during storm related emergencies to include clearing roads, rights-of-way, parks, and other City areas related to damage caused by fallen or broken trees. Utilizes heavy equipment, including bucket trucks, in the performance of job duties.
- Job Duties
Trim & Remove Trees (70%): Remove and trim trees on the City`s property and rights-of-way utilizing rigging equipment and bucket trucks as necessary. Grind all stumps once tree removal is complete. Properly dispose of removed trees and limbs to include grinding or hauling away. Operate equipment and set up work zones in conjunction with safety guidelines.
Provide Storm Related Clean-up (15%): Cleanup tree debris caused by storm related events to include removing trees that have fallen from City property on to roads and/or private property.
Hang Banners and Tree Lights (10%): Install and remove street pole banners within the central business district in accordance with the City`s special event schedule. Provide ongoing maintenance and replacement of lights within the trees along Main Street.
Special Events (5%): Assist with the set-up and clean-up of special events and assist with various City related projects.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Formal Education: High school diploma plus six months to one year of advanced study or training in Arboriculture, Forestry, or related field is required.
Experience: Over two years of experience in bucket truck, tree trimming, and tree removal are required.
Driver`s License Required: Must have or obtain a valid South Carolina Commercial Learner`s Permit (CLP) within 3 weeks of hire. Must have or obtain a valid Class B South Carolina Commercial Driver`s License (CDL) with air brake provisions within 3 months of hire.
Certifications and Other Requirements: None.
Overall Strength Demands: Very Heavy strength demands include exerting over 100 pounds occasionally, 50-100 pounds frequently, or from 20 up to 50 pounds constantly.
Physical Demands: Continuously requires standing, walking, lifting, carrying, kneeling, pushing/pulling, climbing, vision, hearing, and talking. Frequently requires foot controls, bending, crouching, and twisting. Occasionally requires fine dexterity, sitting, reaching, handling, and balancing. Rarely requires crawling.
Machines, Tools, Equipment, and Work Aids: CDL Equipment: Bucket truck and dump truck exceeding 26,000 pounds and trailers exceeding 10,000 pounds. Non-CDL Equipment: Bucket Truck under 26,000 pounds, tracked arial lift, dump trucks under 26,000 pounds, pick-up trucks, passenger vans, utility vehicles, trailer mounted arrow board, trailers under 10,000 pounds, backhoe, front end loader, mini excavator, skid steer loader, air compressor, powered wheel barrow, tractors with power take off system, hand tools, various mowers, hedge trimmers, stick edger auger, tillers, weedeaters, back pack blower, leaf vacuum, backpack sprayer, boom sprayers, pressure washer, concrete saw, chain saw, pole saw, cement mixer, bed edger, sod roller, water pump, heavy duty plate tamper, trencher, aerator, fertilizer spreaders, stump grinder, and rigging equipment.
Computer Equipment and Software: Computer and related software, phones, two-way radio, map software, and work management software.
Overall Working Conditions: Disagreeable: Frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards.
Environmental Factors: Daily exposure to extreme temperature, wetness and/or humidity, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, and physical hazards.
Health and Safety: Constant exposure to mechanical hazards, electrical hazards, and physical danger. Frequent exposure to chemical hazards. Occasional exposure to fire hazards. Rare exposure to explosives.
Primary Work Location: Outdoors.
Protective Equipment Required: helmet, gloves, eye protection, ear protection, steel toe boots, safety vest, chainsaw chaps, bee suit, spray mask, fall harness, and climbing rope.
Frequently requires time pressures, emergency situations, frequent change of tasks, irregular schedule/overtime, performing multiple tasks simultaneously, working closely with others as part of a team, tedious or exacting work, and noisy/distracting environment.
