Brief Description of the Job: Under supervision, repair and replace tires on all types of City vehicles. Perform work involving the maintenance and repair of gasoline or diesel driven engines and related auto equipment, machinery, and/or tools, while under direct supervision. Perform vehicle parts replacement and repair for the Fast Lane program. Assist with assignments such as brakes and suspension repairs, minor adjustments, engine tune-ups, air conditioning services, and basic manufacturer maintenance services. Input service and repair data into the fleet management job order software. Assist in the cleaning and organizing of the shop area and maintenance of shop equipment.
- Job Duties
Repair and Replace Tires (50%): Perform all aspects of tire service and repair on various vehicles of the City of Greenville`s fleet. Inspect, install, repair, and/or replace tires and rims on all City vehicles as needed. Mount/dismount, balance and rotate, and check air pressure of tires. Enter all completed tire assignment data into fleet management tire tracking software.
Perform Basic Services and Repairs (40%): Maintain and repair gasoline and diesel engines, auto equipment, machinery, and tools. Perform basic services and repairs such as replacing bulbs, and tightening loose parts in support of Fleet`s Fast Lane rapid oil change/lube program. Perform manufacturer-specified preventative maintenance services A and B and safety checks on Fleet vehicles. Secure the necessary repair parts from the parts vendor in order to complete all basic services and repairs. Interpret job orders, follow work flow and document all completed tasks. Document all maintenance and repairs by completing a check sheet for each service provided. Input service and repair data into the fleet management job order software. Assist other mechanics with repairs/replacements such as brakes and suspension, minor adjustments and body work, engine tune-ups, air conditioning services, and basic manufacturer maintenance services.
Clean and Maintain Shop Area (10%): Maintain a clean and safe shop area. Assist co-workers in cleaning, organizing, sweeping, and mopping the shop area. Ensure shop floor, counters/surfaces are free of clutter, debris, and/or spills. Clean tools and shop equipment after use. Store tools and equipment in appropriate designated area.
Overall Strength Demands: Very Heavy strength demands include exerting over 100 pounds occasionally, 50-100 pounds frequently, or from 20 up to 50 pounds constantly.
Physical Demands: Continuously requires standing, fine dexterity, walking, lifting, carrying, reaching, pushing/pulling, climbing, vision, balancing, bending, hearing, twisting, and talking. Frequently requires kneeling, crawling, foot controls, and crouching. Occasionally requires sitting, and handling.
Machines, Tools, Equipment, and Work Aids: Hand tools, nemesis/diagnostic machine, electrical power tools, pneumatic power tools, a/c recovery machine, forklift, grinders, calipers, micrometers, drill press, and hydraulic press.
Computer Equipment and Software: Desktop and laptop computers, Cummins Insight diagnostic, and fleet maintenance software.
Overall Working Conditions: Disagreeable: Frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards.
Environmental Factors: Daily exposure to extreme temperature, wetness and/or humidity, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, and physical hazards.
Health and Safety: Constant exposure to mechanical hazards, chemical hazards, electrical hazards, explosives, communicable diseases, and physical danger or abuse. Frequent exposure to fire hazards.
Primary Work Location: Shop.
Protective Equipment Required: Steel-toed shoes, safety glasses, ear plugs (as needed), and gloves.
Frequently requires time pressures, frequent change of tasks, irregular schedule/overtime, performing multiple tasks simultaneously, working closely with others as part of a team, tedious or exacting work, and noisy/distracting environment. Occasionally requires emergency situations.
Formal Education: High school diploma or equivalent plus six months to one year of advanced study or training in tire service and vehicle mechanics are required.
Experience: Under and including one year of experience in automotive repair.
Driver`s License Required:
Must have a valid South Carolina Class D license. Must have or obtain a South Carolina Class B Commercial Learner`s Permit (CLP) within 3 weeks of hire. Must have or obtain a South Carolina Class B CDL with tanker endorsement and air brake provision within 3 months of hire.
Certifications and Other Requirements: Completion of Competency Classification test, resulting in a minimum ranking of Mechanic I, within 6 months of hire. Placement in the position as a Mechanic I, Mechanic II, or Mechanic III is based on results of Competency Classification Test.
Work schedule consists of four (4) 10-hour workdays with a 3-day weekend. All uniforms, steel-toe boots, and tools provided. ASE incentive pay, paid holidays, and excellent benefits including free medical visits at the City`s Employee Health Center.
