Brief Description of the Job:
Under limited supervision, assist in the removal of litter from streets, sidewalks, and parking garages located in the City. Clear and treat streets during seasonal weather including, removing leaves and debris, ice and snow, and sanding bridges. Ensure sweeper truck is ready for use by conducting daily inspections of the engine area, engine oil and other fluid levels. Sweep all streets on daily work order route. Operate backpack blower, dust pan, broom, pick stick, and snow plow and sander truck.
- Job Duties
Operate Street Sweep (70%): Ensure sweeper truck is ready for use by conducting daily inspections of the engine area, engine oil and other fluid levels. Verify brooms are in the up position and in working order before operating the sweeper. Start and drive sweeper to the beginning of daily work order route. Engage sweeper brooms and activate caution beacons. Sweep all streets on daily work order route. Dump and wash out truck at the end of each day. Fuel and park truck.
Sweep Sidewalks with Backpack Blower (20%): Using backpack blower, clean sidewalks, bridges, curbs/gutters and medians by blowing, gathering up, and removing litter, leaf litter, and other debris to keep City sidewalks and pedestrian right-of-ways clear.
Provide Litter Cleanup (10%): Use dust pan and broom, or pick stick to clean City sidewalks and road sides. Use tenant sweeper to sweep streets.
Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Overall Strength Demands: Medium strength demands include exerting 20-50 pounds occasionally, 10-25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly.
Physical Demands: Continuously requires vision, foot controls, and hearing. Frequently requires walking, lifting, carrying, sitting, climbing, balancing, and twisting. Occasionally requires standing, fine dexterity, pushing/pulling, bending, crouching, and talking. Rarely requires reaching, handling, kneeling, and crawling.
Machines, Tools, Equipment, and Work Aids: Vehicle, tools, street sweeper, water truck, backpack blowers, dust pans, brooms, shovels, pick sticks, and pickup trucks and small sweeper.
Computer Equipment and Software: None.
Overall Working Conditions: Disagreeable: Frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards.
Environmental Factors: Daily exposure to extreme temperature, wetness and/or humidity, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, and physical hazards.
Health and Safety: Occasional exposure to mechanical hazards, chemical hazards, electrical hazards, and communicable diseases.
Primary Work Location: Vehicle and Outdoors.
Protective Equipment Required: Safety glasses, gloves, ear plugs, ear phones, safety vest, steel-toed boots, and dust mask.
Frequently requires time pressures, tedious or exacting work, and noisy/distracting environment. Occasionally requires frequent change of tasks, irregular schedule/overtime, performing multiple tasks simultaneously, and working closely with others as part of a team. Rarely requires emergency situations.
Formal Education: Six (6) months to one year of advanced study/training past the high school equivalency is required.
Experience: Over four (4) years up to and including six (6) years of experience in a public works, utility, or construction field is required. Sweeper operator is a plus.
Driver`s License Required: Must have a South Carolina Class D License and must have or obtain a Class B Commercial Learner`s Permit (CLP) within 3 weeks of hire. Must have or obtain a Class B South Carolina CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements within 3 months of hire.
