Job Description

Brief Description of the Job:
Under the direction of the Wastewater Repair Supervisor, performs a variety of technical and skilled duties in the restoration, rehabilitation, and repair of the City`s wastewater system. Operates a variety of light and heavy equipment, as well as, hand tools in performance of job duties. Installs new wastewater pipe where old existing pipe has failed. Performs confined space entry and trenching and shoring operations. Participates in after-hours on-call duty requiring working after normal working hours and holidays to resolve emergency situations. Supports inclement weather operations (i.e. snow and ice) by operating specific pieces of equipment such as sanders, loaders, and plows.

Job Duties

Essential Functions:
Complete Wastewater Repair Work Orders (80%): Operate dump trucks for hauling material and equipment to job sites. Operates a variety of light and heavy equipment, as well as, hand tools in performance of job duties. Install new sewer pipes and repair old pipes as assigned. Perform confined space entry and trenching and shoring operations. Raise sanitary sewer manholes to grade. Apply cement liner to interior of sewer manholes and finish with trowel and brush. Use tripod, winch, gas detectors, and harness in performance of job duties. Operate jack hammer and remove asphalt debris. Remove old manhole ring and cover. Install metal plates or replace with new ring and cover. Level new ring and cover to street pitch. Tamp new asphalt into hole. Clear right of ways and check creek crossings. Clear right-of-ways for access to Wastewater mains for maintenance or repairs. Perform creek crossing inspections and cleaning of creek crossings as needed.

Provide Emergency Response On-Call (10%): Participate in after-hours on-call duty requiring working after normal hours and during holidays to resolve emergency situations to include, assisting in running heavy equipment to dislodge blockages in sewer pipes.

Support Inclement Weather Operations (5%): Work outside of regular schedule, throughout inclement weather conditions (i.e. snow and ice) by operating sanders, loaders, snowplows, and other specific equipment necessary to clear and maintain roads and walkways. Mix sand and salt for ice removal and treat bridges and roads as necessary. Wash brine and salt off equipment after use.

Ensures Safety (5%): Proactively identifies, removes and/or reports potential safety hazards. Takes steps to address, remove, or report hazardous conditions or items. Complies with City, State, and Federal safety procedures and protocols in the performance of job duties. Ensures equipment and property safety.

Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Physical Demands
Overall Strength Demands: Heavy strength demands include exerting 50-100 pounds occasionally, 25-50 pounds frequently, or from 10 up to 20 pounds constantly.

Physical Demands: Continuously requires fine dexterity, lifting, vision, hearing, and talking. Frequently requires standing, walking, carrying, reaching, kneeling, foot controls, and balancing. Occasionally requires handling, pushing/pulling, climbing, bending, crouching, and twisting. Rarely requires sitting.

Machines, Tools, Equipment, and Work Aids: Dump trucks, tamp, concrete saw, jack hammer, chainsaw, gas detector, concrete mixer, pumps, and hand tools.

Computer Equipment and Software: None.

Working Conditions
Overall Working Conditions: Disagreeable: Frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards.

Environmental Factors: Daily exposure to extreme temperature, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, physical hazards, and wetness and/or humidity.

Health and Safety: Frequent exposure to mechanical hazards, and communicable diseases. Rare exposure to chemical hazards, electrical hazards, and fire hazards.

Primary Work Location: Outdoors.

Protective Equipment Required: Hard hat, steel-toed shoes, gloves, safety vest, safety glasses, ear protection, rain suit, and rubber boots.

Non-Physical Demands
Frequently requires performing multiple tasks simultaneously, working closely with others as part of a team, tedious or exacting work, and noisy/distracting environment. Occasionally requires time pressures, emergency situations, and frequent change of tasks. Occasionally requires irregular schedule/overtime.


Qualifications

Job Requirements
Formal Education: High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Experience: Over 1 year of experience in a public works, utility, or construction field is required.

Driver`s License Required: Must have a valid South Carolina Class D license. Must have or obtain a South Carolina Class B Commercial Learner`s Permit (CLP) within 3 weeks of hire. Must have or obtain a South Carolina Class B CDL with tanker endorsement and air brake provision within 3 months of hire.
