DEFINITION
To provide counseling and crisis intervention to troubled youth and their families through individual, group, and family therapy sessions; to maintain records and statistical information as required; and to act as a liaison between the municipal court, City schools, and the public.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives direction from the Youth Alternatives Director.
May exercise direct supervision over volunteer staff.
ESSENTIAL AND MARGINAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS --Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Essential Functions:
1. Direct counseling with youth and parents; provide emergency services and support to clients; maintain accurate client records.
2. Coordinate and monitor special programs, including work study, work alternatives, outreach, alternative experience, big brothers/big sisters, and adolescent day treatment; provide or arrange for student transportation.
3. Supervise and provide training for assigned volunteer staff; supervise volunteer matches; facilitate group therapy sessions.
4. Assist in the preparation and distribution of juvenile court information; review court cases; prepare articles, releases, public service announcements, and public information.
5. Collect and interpret various statistics relevant to office functioning; complete departmental paperwork and documentation.
6. Attend various community meetings related to youth alternatives and services; serve as advocate for clients in schools and in court; plan and administer safety projects and community awareness events.
Marginal Functions:
1. Prepare and maintain a variety of reports, records, and files.
2. Obtain evaluations of services from clients.
3. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of:
Principles of child psychology and juvenile delinquent behavior.
Principles of counseling and education.
Public relations techniques.
Methods and techniques of group and individual therapy.
Current legal issues involved with juvenile delinquents.
Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment.
Principles and procedures of record keeping.
Ability to:
Maintain positive contacts throughout the community.
Update legal information and conduct research.
Work independently in the absence of supervision.
Prepare accurate statistical reports.
Work with children, adolescents, and their families.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including the general public.
Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following:
Walking, standing or sitting for extended periods of time
Operating assigned equipment.
Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:
Making observations
Communicating with others
Reading and writing
Operating assigned equipment.

Experience and Training Guidelines
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
Two years of increasingly responsible counseling experience
Training:
Equivalent to a Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in counseling, psychology, sociology, or a related field. May require a Masters degree depending on area assigned.

Environmental Conditions:
Inside environment working closely with others.
Physical Conditions:
Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for walking or sitting for prolonged periods of time; climbing, running and lifting on occasion.
