Waterbury Hospital Health Center

About Us:

At Waterbury Hospital, our guiding principle is, "Caring Makes a World of Difference.' Our services are based upon this philosophy. In fact, our Press, Ganey patient satisfaction scores consistently give high marks to our care-giving staff in the area of expertise and attention to patients. Our nurses' scores are generally our very best results. Patients are also pleased with our physicians, including the amount of time doctors spend with them, the way they address their concerns, and the skill and friendliness of our medical staff.

Waterbury Hospital's Mission and Vision statement:

Vision:
  • We will be the health care organization of choice by providing superior customer service to patients and physicians.
Mission:
  • We provide compassionate high quality health care services through a family of professionals and services.

With 45,000 emergencies a year:

A mid-sized community hospital, Waterbury Hospital is licensed for 367 beds. Each year we care for upwards of 13,000 inpatients, treat 20,000 people in our outpatient medical clinics and handle 45,000 Emergency Department visits. Our Behavioral Health Center, one of the largest in the region, logs over 50,000 outpatient visits per year. Meanwhile, our One-Day Surgery department serves approximately 5,500 area residents annually, including adults and children.

Workforce of 1,900 employees:

Waterbury Hospital is the second-largest employer in Waterbury, after the City of Waterbury itself. Waterbury Hospital counts 1,900 employees, including full-time, part-time and per diem individuals.

Helping area residents stay healthy:

Community health education is one of our strengths at Waterbury Hospital. We provide free or low-cost seminars and health screenings through our 20,000-member Evergreen Club 50, a senior wellness organization for mature adults. Our Kid Care Club offers programs for children and their parents, highlighted annually with a lively, interactive outdoor health fair for kids.

Special Touch Services:

Waterbury Hospital recognizes that exemplary care extends beyond meeting a patient's physical needs. Whether to offer Communion or provide comfort, a dedicated pastoral care team is available seven days a week, 24-hours-a-day for the spiritual well-being of our patients and their families. Additionally, patient representatives visit patients daily to ensure that all needs-large and small-are being met.

Medicine at the mall:

Our outreach efforts continue to grow through our Be Well Center at the Brass Mill Center mall in Waterbury. Our mammography screening and blood-drawing services at our mall store have been so well received that we have expanded to now offer mini health seminars at the center.

When only the best will do:

Waterbury Hospital's Centers of Excellence include:
  • The Orthopaedic Center for Joint Reconstruction is among the busiest joint replacement centers in the state, with more than 500 hip and knee replacements and revisions performed annually. The Center draws from a wide geographic area, including Westchester County in New York state, and Fairfield County in southern Connecticut. The Center is led by Kristaps Keggi, M.D., a pioneer in joint replacement, in particular his use of the ceramic hip.
  • The Comprehensive Center for Arthritis at Waterbury Hospital specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of arthritis, painful musculoskeletal conditions and rheumatologic diseases. Conditions treated at the center include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, tendinitis and bursitis, fibromyalgia, Lyme disease, scleroderma, and inflammatory muscle disease, among others. The physician staff includes Jane Cooper, M.D., Susan Giles, M.D. and David Podell, M.D., all of whom are board-certified rheumatologists and are active in rheumatology teaching programs with the Yale University Primary Care Residency Program. The doctors work closely with a staff of nurses and medical assistants, as well as referring physicians, physical therapists and other healthcare providers to provide state-of-the art rheumatologic care and ongoing support to patients. Patients are seen by referral from their primary care provider.
  • The Henry S. Chase Outpatient Center is a bustling outpatient facility with over 20,400 visits per year. Run by the doctors of the Yale Primary Care Program, the center operates similarly to a private doctor's office. New patients are always welcome. The Center is under the direction of Jeffrey Wong, M.D.
  • The Center for Behavioral Health is one of Connecticut's largest mental health facilities providing inpatient care in a modern and attractive setting, and quality outpatient care. The Center offers counseling for families, individuals, adolescents and geriatric patients. The programs address substance addiction, crisis counseling, help for those with personality disorders and more.
  • The Family Care Center at Waterbury Hospital is affiliated with Connecticut Children's Medical Center in Hartford and offers specialized care to children close to home. We are proud of our connection with one of the most highly esteemed children's hospitals in the Northeast, and are pleased with the many benefits the partnership brings to both our patients and medical and clinical staffs
