Location Details
Our plant in Rogers, Arkansas opened its doors in December 2003. Since that time, the plant has grown its production capability by adding new equipment and expanding its building. This location continues to add new product lines and attributes its success to the results of its self-managed, high performance work teams.
The organization structure of this Cryovac location is somewhat unique. The business model we practice is that of self-managing teams. Our organizational structure is flat in design, as opposed to the traditional, pyramid-like style of most organizations. As a result of this flat structure, the Plant Manager is the only supervisor at our facility. There are no supervisors or team leaders on the floor, instead, everyone reports directly to the Plant Manager. Supervision and management structure is significantly reduced and employees in group settings are given responsibilities previously handled by management such as production schedules, training, overtime scheduling, multiple jobs, and the like. Responsibilities of process technicians are expanded to set work goals and to organize around those goals. This approach not only provides for employee discretion to better serve the customer, but also the authority to identify within a group setting what the goals will be and how best to organize processes in order to achieve them.
Self-managing teams will be self-regulating. The work of team members will be interdependent. For the whole work of the group to be accomplished, workers will rely on each other to perform a part of the work. The work is not centered on the individual; it is focused on what the group does together. It is an approach that requires management to leave the driving to others. Management is needed only when the team needs re-direction. Otherwise, they stay away from the team except to provide resources such as equipment, access to training, and other related support.
Success is measured by continuous monitoring of team strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. These areas are identified at the start and progress monitored, measured and discussed openly with the team.
