Facts of Green Bay
Since the time of the glaciers, which receded roughly 10,000 years ago, the Fox River and Green Bay region has supported several Native American cultures with its rich fisheries, waterfowl, wild rice, forests and water. Archeological evidence shows these early people inhabited the Red Banks area on Green Bay's east shore as far back as 7000 BC.The Fox River divides the City into east and west sides which are connected by four bridges.
Don Tilleman Bridge: opened to traffic in 1973
Tower Drive Bridge: opened to traffic in 1979.
Walnut Street Bridge: opened to traffic 1987; replaced bridge that was built in 1910.
Ray Nitschke Bridge: opened to traffic 1998; replaced bridge that was built in 1924.

The City of Green Bay covers 46.1 square miles or 29,489.64 acres. (Brown County covers 525 square miles or 338,443 acres).

We pump water from Lake Michigan, which started in 1957. Before the Lake Michigan pipeline, Green Bay had 10 wells.

The City is served by a mayor and Common Council of elected officials consisting of 12 members. Elections are held every 4 years for mayor and every 2 years for alderpersons.

The average winter daytime temperature is 26 degrees; average summer daytime temperture is 70 degrees; average July temperature is 82 degrees; annual rainfall is 29 inches, and the annual snowfall is 48.4 inches. The 2008 snowfall was 72.7 inches, a record. On December 26, 2008, Green Bay beat the previous record set in 1887 for snow during the month. In 1887 the December snowfall was 36.4 inches, by December 26, 2008 Green Bay had a total snowfall of 39.7 inches.

Green Bay collects at curbside, 2,340 tons of recyclable containers and 5,320 tons of mixed paper.
